A problem with that comparison is that Peppers was highly productive in his final year at UNC. He had over 9 sacks, 60 tackles (19 for a loss) and 3 interceptions while being constantly double and triple teamed. If Clowney had put up similar (sacks and tackles) numbers, he would have been a lock as the top pick. People would not care about his 21 reps as much. But he is coming off of a dud season, and as such, being nitpicked is par for the course.
Clowney was highly productive as well, even if he only had 3 sacks, I can understand how the casual fan who just looks at counting stats could get that impression, but disruption IS pressure and no one was more disruptive than Clowney.
You are really reaching here. Clowney is a top-tier prospect, and any non-casual fan would tell you that if he had played this season with the same relentlessness as a Soph0more, there wouldn't be a Bridgewater (or pick another player) or Clowney debate. I absolutely love the idea of having a freakish athlete lining up opposite of Watt and pressuring the QB without having to blitz (as much), which seems severely under-valued by this board. However, his lack of motor this season is a legitimate concern. If you want to use his ailments as an excuse for his drop in production, that might stick, for some. But to say that he was highly productive in comparison to Peppers, it is a big time reach.

The casual fan looks at one highlight from Sportscenter and their branding him of the unheralded #1 pick of the following year's draft and still runs with it, even after a dud of a season. You guys complain about us making excuses for Teddy, the Clown-ey train keeps rolling over there though. Ha.
....no one is making "excuses", just pointing out what's going on to causal fans who don't watch the tape, or can't understand what they are seeing.
Wow... 4.47 and 4.48 for Clowney! I dont really care what the Texans do with their #1 pick - just hope they do something to make the team significantly better this offseason.
FWIW, after he ran his 4.48 (2nd run) Sapp said he didn't care what he ran and bashed his effort shown on tape.
LOL fat guy sees someone run faster than he could ever dream of running then talks smack about his effort....
That's the problem though. I made my personal analysis of Clowney (can't recall which thread it was posted in) and all he did was try to beat his man with speed all season long. People figured him out last year and sent double teams his way. When they weren't doing that they let him take himself out of plays by allowing him to speed rush on the edge every time, the opposing team would run right thru his gap. In the run game, he consistently missed plays that would be ran into his gap but then made the tackle after the RB would already gain 8+ yards. That shows the speed he's capable of utilizing but the discipline and instinctiveness he showed in 2011 was nowhere to be found this past year. 4.47 40 is amazing for a defensive lineman, but he was supposed to destroy EVERY drill of the combine, according to most "analysts", here and in the media.
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
The longer your arms are the higher you have to push a bench press. Longer arms almost always yield lower reps.
No one does the bench press on a football field. You do, however, run and jump. I'm Downey with Clowney.
Clowney's bench press confirms that he is completely ineffective for defenses that emphasize laying on your back and pushing opponents towards the sky.
That is not a bench press. You are not prone on your back. The object you are pushing against is not an inanimate metal bar. There is technique involved in lineman play. LOL. Bingo. Don't forget the opponent is not allowed to move and must be completely rigid with his weight displaced on either end of himself in such a scenario.
