I was watching. He struggled to get 19, barley got 20, and they flat out gave him 21. And his 40 time won't really matter because 40 time doesn't give indication that a player will be a great pass rusher (J.J. ran a 4.8). Any player who's up for the #1 pick is open for criticism as far as I'm concerned and I'm no hypocrite. Clowney just let the pendulum swing to one of these quarterbacks getting drafted IMO.
The 225 bench press is more a test endurance (and weight room habits), not that of power. The problem with such a pedestrian number of reps is that it validates his reputation as being lazy. I don't care how long his arms are, both Mario Williams and JJ Watt have similar wingspans at a comparable size. 21 reps is very disappointing, especially for someone who says his goal is to become one of the greats.
i am not bashing clowney. i raise a legitimate concern. if his game is based on power/speed, which it is, 21 bench reps is concerning. watt's game is power & speed (quickness), and he posted 34. He also has the same wingspan as clowney. clowney should not have wrote a check his a** could not cash.
Clowney was better off staying around 280-285 and just focusing on being a power/strength rusher Doesn't have the natural "bend" to be a speed rusher
Not if he wants the Texans to draft him #1 to play OLB....That's why he cut weight and is showing off his speed, everyone already knows about his strength.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Khalil Mack 23 reps Anthony Barr 15 Borland 27 Pierre Louis 28 Fortt 30 Bullough 30 Bradford 23 Van Noy 21</p>— Mike Loyko (@NEPD_Loyko) <a href="https://twitter.com/NEPD_Loyko/statuses/437719571693592576">February 23, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
that's not how the draft works. players do not mold themselves for certain teams prior to be drafting. especially top 5 locks.
also, clowney is on record saying he hopes ATL trades up for him.... that kind of destroys your theory (excuse)
Do you need a quote when it's obvious that's what he's doing? You don't cut to 266 when trying to be a DE. The team with the #1 pick has a need at OLB so he trained to fit that need.
Blake has tape to point to that shows him running around, over, and away from defenders. Mike Mayock said he didn't care about his 40 time because he saw the tape. Teddy and Johnny have good tape to point to as well. Clowney has tape of 3 sacs and a disappointing bench press performance... Yikes...!!! And pass rushers are one of the easier positions to find in later rounds especially in this draft. Can't halz @** at the combine and expect to go #1 overall if you're a defensive player.
Ah yes, the one quote about "wanting to go to ATL" overrides the other quote about wanting to go to Houston....Just stop.
still waiting on evidence that clowney is gearing up to play OLB... or is this another bobby original?
Another fun note, Clowney is often talked about as the best defensive prospect since Julius Peppers who only had 24 reps at the combine....let's keep that in mind.
