I didn't say it was coming out this year did I? Just that hopefully we'll get it.

I agree that being at E3 this year means little to being released this year or next, especially when we don't even know what they will be showing/announcing. E3 is just when we should find out about an expected launch date.

So what if it is a tech demo? Doesn't mean it wasn't part of the process of working on a future game.

Skyward Sword was scheduled to be shown at E3 and released in the same year, but then was delayed by a year.

    Yeah, my bad.

I think the move to 60 FPS alone is quite substantial. The lack of 1080p does hurt the XBO version, but it does look better than the 360/PS3 versions (no surprise).

Not 100% sure, but MGS5 might be a good example of why 1080p is so difficult on XBO. The engine might rely heavily on having a high bandwidth available, and that's just not something XBO really has (it is "only" a few times greater than 360/PS3, so it can't offer much better in terms of resolution). The XBO can be substantially more powerful, but if there are bad bottlenecks in its design, it will hold back some of that processing power. Guess they could rework things, but then I'm not sure it would run so well on 360/PS3 or other platforms (or look as good).

And quite frankly, given how great the game looks on 360/PS3, I don't think they should really worry too much about changing their approach to rendering. Their engine seems really nice.

If you intent is to create another thread, where we can talk about games and not CONSOLE WARS, I don't think that would work too well. It would just be more of the same (but with "PS4/XBO has better games! PS4/XBO has no good games!" instead).

I suggest posting new threads about specific games (ala Titanfall), or using the Xbox One/PS4 threads for minor games (The Order, Witness, Below, Quantum Break, etc).

More of that going on. Though this has been speculated for a long time.

A biased source (I remember Jack Tretton acting like PS3s were sold out at one point), but I wouldn't be too surprised by that claim.

Oh yeah, the PS4 launch in Japan is almost underway I think. There are some events and streams going on, though I don't really expect much. We'll get some sales numbers in a few days maybe (unless they're not so good, in which case, might need to wait a week or so). Not sure there will be anything else, at least for the CONSOLE WARS stuff.

PS4 still needs to be released in a few more countries (Eastern Europe I think), but after Japan, that's pretty much all the major regions.

Yup, I haven't even made it to the point where I turn the generators on to get out of the building. I think maybe if I play with the TV muted I might be okay

No, that's exactly what it means. Nintendo came out about a year after that demo was released and said it was purely a tech demo and had nothing to do with a game in development. In fact at the time they said there wasn't one in development. I'm fairly positive they didn't begin serious work on a new Zelda until Wind Waker HD development began (or was close to being finished). Your Skyward Sword example doesn't really help your reasoning; Nintendo games get pushed back like clockwork.

You think development of tech demos is never related to actual games (Ocarina of Time comes to mind)? They frequently are. That would be related to early development, and not actual in-game play. We know they toy'd with different styles for the new title.

We know they were working on the unnamed Zelda while doing WW HD.

All developers push back games frequently, nobody is denying that. You just act is if there is a 0% chance.

I don't remember saying that no tech demo has ever been related to a game in development. I said that demo was not related to a Zelda game in development (because it wasn't). 0%? I'd have to work for Nintendo to confirm a number like that. 30%, and yes I randomly picked that number out of thin air. And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Xbox one is selling so bad that Walmart will give u a free game with it and target will give u a 50$ gift card. Not sure how long this lasts but maybe it's time to pony up for titanfall.

I could be wrong, but I swear the Rift will be PC only.

I think I read the same.

BTW, that reminds me that I think I might want to correct myself from earlier in the thread. I think someone asked me if the XBO/PS4 could easily handle VR type experiences. I acted like they should be more than powerful enough. That's not quite right. I still think they'd be powerful enough (at least PS4), but I actually missed some important aspects of VR.

I think you need to render games at REALLY high framerates, among other things. So something like a 1080p game for VR would be VERY intensive. I think that's still doable, but the visuals in the games themselves will suffer some.

So you lied to me?!!!!!

I have been reading that Sony looks like they will be showing off their own VR headset for the PS4 in July or there abouts. It will be interesting to see how it stands up to the OR.

The interesting thing about Sony's VR is that there is so little info out there about it. They really have gone in the opposite direction from OR in that they are keeping it under wraps while even I could buy an OR if I wanted one to check it out.

I tend to think VR will be less about game play and more about "experiences" for a long while anyway. I hope Im wrong though. Even if you could just walk through GTAV it would be an amazing experience. Maybe a game like The Sims would be perfect for it too. You step into first person view, youre not running around, shooting and doing all that much really anyway in that game. The graphics probably lend themselves to the current VR headsets too.

Its really exciting to think about where developers can go with all these new toys.

    Haha, yeah sorry. :(

I'm a bit behind the curve on how VR works, and i just made some incorrect assumptions. I knew the hardware (of the VR headset) and software related to it was very important, but I assumed it was most/all of the importance. I didn't realize how much work would be needed by the hardware itself, especially for high resolution VR (of course, lower resolution VR wouldn't be as taxing, and we don't know what Sony will go with).

The link I posted earlier says that Sony might show it off at GDC (in March). Don't know about that, but it would probably be a good start. Not sure there is anything even going on in July for them (E3 is in June IIRC?). GDC would be a good spot since they can target developers for it (it will likely be highly technical). Can give devs 6-12 months, and maybe launch it next year or something (unless they've secretly been working with devs already). *shrug*

I don't really care to speculate about it too much until some actual details are released.

Uh-oh, we finally have a game that is clearly better on XBO vs PS4 with Strider:
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-strider-next-gen-face-off
Though it seems to be do to a bug. PS4 version seems to have a texture filtering glitch, which is not present in any of the other versions (including PS3/360). It does look quite bad though.

Also, it is likely too early to say for sure, but doesn't seem like PS4 will be breaking any records in Japan. Perhaps they shipped more than expected, but bunch of anecdotal reports of systems still sitting in stores unsold.

They're probably still pissed off that they had to wait 3 months for something created in their country. (Before someone replies to this with something dumb, this is a joke)
