Huh? You're worried about Shump's $2.6 million rookie salary? Is it safe to assume that you are extremely worried about Asik and Lin's $15 million salaries and $8.37 million cap hits effecting our 2014 cap space then? Look, Shump's on a rookie deal. Worse case scenario if we need his cap space to sign Lebron or some other superstar we can pay another team to take Shumpert away for nothing. (Remember Royce White?) Send him to Philly with $3 million cash and a second rounder. Shump's cap hit will not affect our 2014 free agency plans. It can only enhance it.
With the way their team has crashed this year, this would be a very popular move with the fan base. Since it's obvious that Lin would not be the star, I bet Melo could be talked into it. Everyone hates Felton now too and Lin would be a clear upgrade. The most contentious parties would probably be Dolan (just too proud) and JR Smith (who needs to be shipped out or waived).
I don't think giving up a 1st round pick is a problem for the Suns. They probably don't want to bring in 4 1st round picks to the roster next season. Now which/how many 1st round picks they give up may be a sticking point.
You misunderstand. Rockets will not have max cap room in 2014 offseason or 2014-2015 season. If the Rockets were to trade for a third star in this time frame, they would need to match contracts. Shumpert's 2.6 million just isn't large enough to match most third star contracts. Asik and/or Lin's contract is 8.3. Add a 1.7 million dollar contract and the Rockets can match a contract worth about 15 million next season. Rockets could re-sign Hawes and sign an MLE to get a couple of contracts on the books, but then would need to trade those pieces along with DMo to have cap room in 2015. Teams that can accept those contracts most likely are competing with Rockets for same players in 2015 free agency.
Hou: Josh Smith Det: Shawn Marion, Arron Afflalo, Samuel Dalembert Dal: Omer Asik, Rodney Stuckey Orl: Charlie Villanueva, Terrence Jones
If we move out Lin and Asik and the cap goes to the estimated $62.5 million, we can easily create over $20 million in cap space to sign a max free agent. Shumpert, Jones, and DMo are trade-able and the team that is losing the max free agent will most likely take them back in trade when they see their free agent is going to walk.

Boston wants two first rounders for Rondo... Charlotte wants Pau Gasol... Houston trades: Lin, Brewer, D-Mo, 2014 first rounder (via HOU), 2014 second rounder (via NY) Houston receives: Rondo, McRoberts Charlotte trades: Gordon, McRoberts, 2014 first rounder (via POR) Charlotte receives: Gasol Boston trades: Rondo Boston receives: Lin, Brewer, 2014 first rounder (via HOU), 2014 first rounder (via POR) LA Lakers trade: Gasol LA Lakers receive: Gordon, D-Mo, 2014 second rounder (via NY) Why Houston does it: to get the PG upgrade and third-star-without-full-max-contract player that DM seems to covet. Rondo is a battle-tested floor general that would greatly help us on both sides of the court. Your quintessential boom-or-bust type move that could potentially put us over the top. And McRoberts isn't just a throw-in. He's a 4/5 that shoots with accuracy and is probably the most underrated passer in the league for a big man. Big, plays smart, versatile and brings a good attitude to the table. Why Charlotte does it: Charlotte desperately wants to prove their legitimacy to the rest of the league by not only making the playoffs, but actually making some noise too. Why else would they be interested in a player like Gasol? Gasol's addition would instantly boost them and put them in prime position for a first round "upset" if they play anybody not named Indiana or Miami. All of this while sacrificing minimal assets? I think they do it. Why Boston does it: It's fairly straight forward: Ainge wants two unprotected first rounders for Rondo. Yeah, he probably wants picks higher than two in the 20's but between the draft picks and Lin, I have a hard time seeing a better offer on the table for Rondo before Thursday. Why the Lakers do it: to get a couple assets for a player they are going to lose this summer, regardless. Granted, they probably would want more for Gasol. I suppose this trade would be contingent upon LA valuing D-Mo highly enough and also kind of panicking at the though of what might happen after Thursday if he plays his contract out and walks.
That's a lot of team gutting for renting Shumpert and Hawes when you could just keep Asik and/or Lin for matching purposes.
Atlanta receive: Asik from Houston Shumpert from New York Felton from New York Houston receive: Millsap from Atlanta Illyasova from Milwaukee Milwauke receive: Lin from Houston Artest from New York New York receive: Teague from Atlanta Done and done. One Whopper of a trade
That trade completely wrecks Atlanta's playoff caliber squad. Not to mention, Milwaukee doesn't give up nearly enough. Illyasova's contract is a net negative yet they receive a better player (and contract) in Lin. ...and we don't need both Millsap and Illyasova.
That's not the point. Why should Milwaukee be rewarded for dealing such a terrible contract? It's supposed to be the other way around.
The bucks were going to (over)pay teague before the Hawks matched the offer sheet. I think getting a comparable Pg back to replace a disgruntled PF is its own reward.
But your point is duly noted. I think if the Hawks really want to deal Teague (thereby tanking their playoff aspirations), why not get building blocks back for next year when Horford comes back? Asik Horford Shumper Korver PG to be named later That's fairly solid in the putrid East.
Those 1st round picks are gold this year. Philly might not even take Harden back for their 1st Rounder.
