I completely agree with RC: what's the deal with all the gross oversimplification of the resolution issue? It just seems like folks keep moving the target around to try to make it seem like there is no power differential, or that the power differential doesn't matter.

To re-state (part of) his point: you can't just measure graphical quality by stating the resolution. Guess what, Virtua Tennis 3 ran at 1080p. Whoop-de-do. Because PS3/360 "are capable" of 1080p doesn't really say anything at all about how powerful they are. And yet the bolded part of your post seems to indicate that resolution is indeed all that matters. And since I don't see mainstream adoption of 4k happening any time soon, why in the world would you want to try to run a PS4 game above 1080p on a 1080p display? Useless much? I don't even understand what your point is there.

Texture quality doesn't matter now? Lighting effects? AA? Draw distance? These things affect framerate!

Of course the XBO is capable of 1080p/60fps (just as PS3/360 were), the cogent question is whether it can do it while maintaining the level of graphical detail one would expect from a 2014 game. The question isn't whether you can run Mass Effect 1 at 1080p, it's whether you can run Battlefield 4 at 1080p. Folks are acting like the two are the same.

Just like I feared, the XBone is overpriced and frankly needs significant updates. My GF is happy she can get achievements watching netflix and I'm having more trouble with voice commands than I thought I would. For $100 more than the PS4 I have to say it's more of an investment in my relationship than it is a gaming asset.

If you're having trouble with voice commands, re-calibrate with max volume or near max volume.

Yes, it will be able to run those games at 1080p. There is no question that with more time better quality games will come. Forza 5 looks amazing at 1080p and 60fps. Again, go look at Call of Duty 2 or any launch day Xbox 360 title, and then look at GTA 5. To not admit that the better looking games will come is just silly.

I think everyone understands the PS4 hardware is superior...what is getting debated here is the fact that Game X is running at 1080 on PS4 while 900 on the XBO...and then people pointing to the XBO saying that it's due to it's inferior hardware. The argument is that it's running at 900 due to developer issues, not due to hardware...because, yes, the XBO is capable of running at 1080p. Next year, you'll see more multiplat games being 1080p on both systems. Nobody is talking about texture quality, lighting, etc...all the arguments are directly related to the "PS4 is 1080 while the XBO is 900 ROFL" comments that have taken shape on the internet.

Are the games that you guys playing that boring that you need graphics to draw you in? I for one don't need amazing graphics at all, I just need a good storyline... That's why I love the whole Max Payne series...

Have you played those XBO games? There is no loss of detail or framerate issues on those games. The PS4 crowd have basically said the XBO is not capable of 1080p, 60fps it is. It is capable, and is able to keep the level of detail for Next Gen games. Now, If you want to argue that the PS4 is able to add even more detail...fine. However, that is a different argument. You can take a look at BF4, in which neither game is 1080p and the PS4 detail is better.....but not by a huge amount.

Ryse: Son of Rome on the Xbox One is the best looking launch game on any platform in my opinion, and it is only 900p.

This point has been and continues to be simply a flag for the Xbox One critics to wave. The same exact arguments were made when the PS3 eclipsed the Xbox 360's specs... and the Xbox 360 turned out okay in the end.

EDIT: In my opinion there are far more important things to worry about with the Xbox One's strength over the coming years. Can they deliver to more regions in a timely fashion (currently only 13)? And, can they either overcome the price difference and/or drop the price. We know, that the Kinect will not be an option. Also, will cloud computing really change the debate this generation as much as they hope it does? If Microsoft's new CEO is any indicator, I think it does.

I'm missing the part where anyone said that games will not look better later on down the line. Of course they will.

But I'm not 100% sold on the idea that even most XBO games will run at 1080p/60fps in the future. Certainly not all. And Call of Duty vs a driving game or a sports game is a pretty loaded comparison, since sports/driving games have generally been the ones to hit 1080p in the previous generation. It's easier to make them look better and at higher res because it's a more controlled environment with less going on.

So you're saying the differential is ALL "developer issues," and not at all "inferior hardware?"

I also think there will probably be more multiplats that run 1080p on both. But my guess is that would come more from developers working within the limitations of the XBO, not from them managing to give the same experience on the XBO that they could give on the PS4.

No, I haven't seen anyone say that in a serious context. I've only seen it in a joking "lol xbox 720p" context. Anybody can look and see that 1080p games exist on the XBO. The only real discussion to be had is whether it can consistently do it in next-gen, high-detail games.

    No, it's the same argument.

Whether the XBO is "capable" of 1080p/60fps isn't an argument, it's a statement of fact. It is. The end. Just like PS3 and 360 were.

The point actually worth discussing is, can it consistently hit those numbers in high-detail next-gen games, besides just racing sims and sports games, which have always been easier to hit high resolutions on?

You dismiss the power differential as only a "flag to wave," while continually talking about the Kinect as a foregone conclusion to change the gaming landscape.

I still haven't seen much worthwhile application to gaming yet for the Kinect. Certainly not nearly as much as the much-derided Wii, which most "core gamers" seem to dismiss as some kind of joke. The only Kinect experience I've ever seen that interested me... a first-person fighting game... was in an unplayable state last I checked due to latency.

I see it adding a lot more value as simply a menu navigation/TV/Netflix tool than as a gaming peripheral.

I'm waiting on Kinect Sports for XBO. It said a Spring release date. It would have been nice if they would have had that title at launch but all they had was the jetski demo for it.

Im only talking about the XBO being capable of 1080/60 fps. I think that "number" will be reached very regularly within a couple years. This has nothing to do with the PS4. I understand the PS4 and it's superior hardware. Im purely discussing the games that are coming out right now for the XBO at 900p or lower. Yes, the majority of the issues are developer related, not hardware related.

If you want to point to difference in 3 years from now why the PS4 has better lighting than the XBO, then we will talk about the XBO with inferior hardware. However, as it is right now, there are more issues on the developer side than on the hardware side.

Anyone notice random frame rate stutters in the Netflix PS4 app? I don't experience this using Amazon Video but specifically the house of cards series I will randomly see a frame rate drop.

Drexlerfan22 is fighting the good fight for me (and I appreciate it!). :)

I'll just add this excerpt from the Anandtech mini-analysis from a while back (which I wish more people read):
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/7528/the-xbox-one-mini-review-hardware-analysis/2
As it mentions, the XBO is a bit limited in the ROP area (among other things), and its setup is a bit less than what other GPUs have (which are designed by AMD to easily support 1080p). There's not much software or more dev time can really do.

You guys are right that we might just see games with 1080p on both. Though in those cases, what you'll likely see is better IQ on the PS4 version (since it can use its ROPs and other advantages to provide better AA). I don't know which direction devs will go. I'm not even sure 1080p will always be a given with the PS4. But as I said, resolution/AA/IQ will always be a bit lacking on XBO (assuming you want 1080p and at least decent AA).

I know you're just joking, but...

They didn't see PS4 issues though. I imagine both are a little buggy, and as usual, the PS3 is the leader in this area.

Why not test it with your PS4 and see if you get the same results? Would be interesting to hear results from the same person over the same connection.

Ive only used Netflix once on the PS4...mostly because I have my TV and cable running through my XBO, so its just easier for me to talk to my tv to get Netflix on the screen.

The PS4 had no issues though, and a few of my friends that have PS4s have not said anything about issues either and I know they are dedicated Netflix users...I was just trying to add fuel to the fire of the War that's currently taking place.

Disregard, my home network is obviously pulling Netflix from a certain CDN. Just tried on chromecast and I just noticed the same issue in a certain scene in house of cards. I was able to replicate.

I was busy with work earlier, so I pretty much ignored much of the 1080p "debate", except for some of the brief points I made.

Do any of you guys actually want me to explain why I think what I think? If so, I'd be happy to explain the reasons why I'm skeptical of the hardware setup in the XBO. But if every post I make is refuted with, "BUT BUT BUT BUT RAYMAN LEGENDS IS 1080P 60 FPS!!!" (same as the PS3/360 versions IIRC), I'm not sure I should bother.

To be honest, I'd be hesitant to call for full 1080p/60 FPS on either platform. You guys are right that graphics get better over time, but that doesn't mean that resolutions and framerate get better. In the PS3's case, it seemed like both got a lot worse! There were several 1080p 60 FPS games at or around launch. MGS5? Sub-HD and 30 FPS (not sure if that is a solid 30 FPS either). COD? Sub-HD (IIRC?) with sub-60 FPS I believe. GTA V? I *think* it might be 720p, and calling it 30 FPS is probably being generous.

I don't know if that will necessarily happen again with the PS4/XBO. The hardware is a little more capable of supporting higher resolutions (while also improving graphical effects). But it is a possibility (I'm kind of rusty on this, or else I could possibly speak more definitively). 60 FPS is a pipe dream though. I'm not sure that will ever be a realistic goal in most generations of consoles, regardless of hardware power. For most devs, if their game is a solid 60 FPS, they'll just decide to push more effects until the game hits a solid 30 FPS (or...um...less). This has little to do with the power in the systems (they could each have Titans even!), and more to do with the general design decisions made by developers.

So when people say they expect most/all future games to be 1080p AND 60 FPS, I can't help but be a little skeptical (especially of the latter point). Unless they're talking about PC gaming of course. ;)

Blah blah blah, Ramble ramble ramble.

    Good night everyone!

There are people who get 480p on their cable box and don't bother changing the resolution.
What you people here don't talk about is audio. Love playing games in 5.1 . With a real 5.1 setup.
