as posted in the all-star weekend thread - here is the winning dunk, done much better by some 6'1 white kid <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/nOEynAuXqK4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Could you imagine if it was in Houston this year? The b**** fest in the ASW thread, oh god. WAAAAAH, WAAAAAAAH!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAH! The Toyota Center crowd is embarrassing and not loud enough. WAAAAAAAH! We have the worst fans, WAAAAAAAAAAAH! God, that **** was annoying.
A.) Get bigger names B.) Get rid of the "team" format C.) Keep the three attempts/dunker rule D.) No talking from the judges... just scores E.) Give Nick Cannon a drum, and let him do his drumline routine... and no talking. F.) Tell dunkers that a "powerful" dunk (that makes lots of noise) is just as impressive as an acrobatic one.
It was good, didnt think it was better though but different with the elbow dunk. Wall made it look much more smoother and impactful The crowd last year in Houston wasn't really any better
Why don't they just ask the all star participants that will play the game on Sunday, select two players from each team and let those 4 guys go and participate in dunk contest. Basically someone in the all star team needs to represent their conference. I mean Paul George, John Wall, D. Lillard were already participating. The other 4th could have been KD, Anthony Davis, or D. Howard. This way you will always have all stars participating and none of this stupid crap format will ever take place. I was in favor of new format earlier but once they ended it after Wall's dunk, I was like WTF.
They should open it up to street ballers. There are some freaks out there that would make the NBA dunks look lame.

I think one of the biggest issues is that these kids show zero energy and charisma. The closest you got was John Wall on that last dunk. Show a little energy man. Another issue was brought up by the commentators. You have a guy like Barnes who "looks" like he'd destroy the rim and he's doing dunks that 6'1 guys are doing. Speaking of showmanship, this was the '94 NCAA dunk contest but Kris Bruton is still one of my favorite dunkers <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/LGw2VTA4NQM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/2_27ZGz1wFs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/od8PsfEYZPY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/CsQZcyWZr1c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Haven't enjoyed these since 2008. They need to do those dunks from YouTube. I'm guessing the only reason they don't is most either take too many attempts to get the alleys right or the risk of injury. Fml for not being a hardcore fan during the vc days and too young for the mj and dom battles.
Every year I swear it's my last watching the dunk contest, and this year is no different. I just hope next year I'll be true to my word and save myself the torture of sitting through another one of these things.
Hmmm, dunk contest is all about the hype before the dunk. Thats why I always like the cupcake dunk, the superman dunk, the kryptonate dunk, the double dunks, heck, part of the fun about the free throw line dunk is the hype when the player goes full court to start running. They should make props/team mate be part of at least 1 dunk. About the format, just return to the basic. Only 1 attempt each, but make it best 2 of 3 dunks.
Yep, my thoughts exactly. Nothing about the all-star game is remotely new or interesting. Dunking has been legal in the NBA for awhile now. I can watch Michael Jordan or Dr. J highlights on youtube. I don't get the appeal of the 3 point shootout nor the celebrity game. And at this point, all I care about is Harden and Howard not getting injured at the all star game. I've watched zero of the events this year. I've love to come up with a replacement for the ASG, but I simply can't. What hasn't been done before with basketball?
They should get rid of the dunk contest for a while. Come out with new events. Something the actual all stars have to do. edit: It should be more 1v1 type of events. I'd like to see a game of horse. Or knockout. Can you imagine how entertaining that would be?
> Has a strong opinion > Didn't actually watch any of the events. You should at least watch some of the events instead of read opinions on CF, before you judge. 3pt shootout showcases a skill that might not be prevalent for casual fans. It allows the Novaks and Korvers of the NBA to be in the spotlight. Celebrity game is just a gimmick to draw in more fans. "Hey, so-and-so is playing basketball? Cool! I'll tune into more basketball games then!" The ASG serves as a showcase for most of the best players to play each other all at once. I don't think there's something groundbreaking to replace it with, that does everything the ASG does.
That was pretty brutal. Not even Lebron could save that. The format isn't great although I appreciate them changing things but this seemed more like a change for the sake of change. A few ideas: Problem: players are too friendly with each other - the competitive spirit needs to be reintroduced into this competition. Anyone who saw Reggie Jackson loaf through the skills competition knows what I'm talking about. Solution: Introduce street ball dunkers into the contest who have something to prove. The NBA players don't want to get shown up and the street ballers want to make a name for themselves so they will bring their A game. Problem: the dunks & gimmicks lack imagination. I suspect in the middle of the grind of the NBA season, there isn't a lot of time for players to prepare for the contest if they are announced a few weeks ahead of All Star weekend. Solution: Each NBA team gets to select one player from their roster to represent their team in the dunk contest. At All Star weekend, the winner of the dunk contest picks from a random drawing of a card the field they will face the next year. That gives those players nearly a full year to cook up something good and the "team" element means their teammates will be helping them out. The added benefit of drawing your competitors the next year is it takes time away from all the other CRAP they try to entertain people with during the game. Problem: the crowds reaction seems weak. Solution: Less loud music - more mics picking up the crowd, have a large real fan(not celebrity) section behind the basket, mics picking up the sound of the court(the sound of the rim should shake the whole venue). Make it all about a wild festive environment - not the club(because that's where everyone goes to look cool). ....and will someone be appointed the ambassador of the dunk who comes up with good ideas for these guys? I have always wanted someone to do a godzilla dunk - by rolling out a mini city scape and dunking over it. How about the "Rome wasn't built in a day" dunk where someone dunks over several people dressed as Roman warriors. If we are going to do props - let's do props. Put a large picture frame over the rim so the dunk looks like a poster/potrait in the stills. No more lame gimmicks, lame dunks, lame excuses to have people say pointless things in front of a Sprite logo just to give your sponsor some more screen time. Ugh....
