Isiah Thomas is the worst by far. Jim Paxson and Danny Ferry are up there, as well as Bryan Colangelo. Dunleavy (former GM of the Clips). Otis Smith was pretty bad. David Kahn. MJ was never a GM, and while Dumars is bad now he did put together a solid championship team.
Dumars should be left off the list. Any GM who is responsible to a championship should never be considered for the worst GM.
I've said this in other threads: Gar Foreman of the Bulls. They've overpaid so many guys over the years, and they've been completely inept at finding talent to surround Derrick Rose. They have so many assets now. If they don't make a move before the trade deadline, I'll consider him on par with guys like Isaiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Glen Grunwald. Seems like the Knicks have been a cesspool of bad management for years, as well.

I'll go Chris Grant. Very unimpressed with his drafting resume. He was given Kyrie at #1. This was a no-brainer. Only other option was Derrick Williams, and anyone who actually knows about basketball rightly had Kyrie #1. He then took Tristian at #4, Waiters #4, Bennett #1. I absolutely hated the Waiters pick because I foresaw problems between him and Kyrie. Kyrie needs an off-ball 2 guard, and Waiters..well, he likes the ball in his hands a lot, and he likes to shoot a lot. I really wanted them to go Barnes. And with Bennett--I thought Oladipo (I went to IU--sorry) would've been the best fit. He's a natural 2-3, and he would fit PERFECTLY next to Kyrie. Lastly, I really wanted them to take Valacuinas over Thompson. Now, Tristian has played well. Hes been a good player. But I think Vala has a higher ceiling long-term wise, and fits better, esp. with Varajao already present. If I were the Cavs GM, my lineup would be: Kyrie Oladipo Barnes Varajao Valacunias But Grant solidified himself as an absolutely incompetent GM. One of my buddies from Cleveland has a friend who works in the organization, and he said one of Lebrons biggest reasons for parting was Grant. He really liked Danny Ferry, their prior GM, and was upset when Grant was brought on board .
I guarantee you there are people on this board who would put Morey on this list. However, Gar Foreman, Glen Grunwald, Joe Dumars, any Cavaliers GM since LeBron was a rookie, and of course KAAAHHHNNN are in a league of their own.
I believe Detroit get the champions more than 10 years ago. And Dumars has show you how to demonish a championship team and never recover. Just remember how much he spend on the following four player: Charlie Villanueva, Ben Gordon, J smith and Jenning.
Since Darko, Dumars has drafted pretty well. He made a bunch of good moves to assemble a consistent contender in the 2002-08 Pistons. Luck seems to play a huge role in whether a GM is considered any good or not (see: Basketball Reasons). Geoff Petrie was considered a great GM 10 years ago, and was the architect of a Kings team that should have won a title. Colangelo made a bunch of good moves with the Suns. Success is cyclical.
I can see the case for Dumars. I mean basically what he's been doing is building teams out of players that have bounced around the league a lot because of their odd (for the time) skillsets. Is it possible he just got lucky the first time? On the other hand, even with the Pistons as terrible as they are, he's drafted pretty well without having a top 5 pick.
I used to think Isiah was the worst GM in the league. Now I'm not so sure. That organization makes the exact same kind of moves now they did under the reign of Isiah. Even when they had Donnie Walsh, a pretty damned respectable GM, they still sucked and still made the same stupid mistakes over and over and over. I'm starting to feel like the GM in New York isn't the problem - it's the owner. James Dolan makes the decisions for the Knicks and he's very bad at it. I ain't gonna lie - I love Melo. When he's hot he's as dangerous as anybody in the league (and I went to Syracuse), but dude is a bonehead. Like Stat is a bonehead. Like JR Smith is a bonehead. Like Steve Francis was a bonehead. Like Stephon Marbury was a bonehead. Like Eddy Curry was a bonehead. And on and on and on. They keep building their teams around me first boneheads. That is their M.O. And it's obvious it's James Dolan.
How the hell do I narrow down the list? For me Chris Grant takes the cake. I mean Isiah Thomas at least was a good drafter, and Ferry made mediocre moves but no one drafted straight up bad like Grant did. I should have known the guy was a doofus the moment he picked Irving at the very last second just to "make him sweat".
