The Bulls do that, and they are 4th in turnovers. The Rockets turn the ball over a lot because they have turnover prone guys like Harden, Howard, Lin and Asik.
I believe Morey actually said in a recent interview that turnover stats are not seen by him as important or necessarily negative. That record does indeed hint that he might be right. Perhaps it is like fouls. There are good fouls and bad fouls. There are fouls when a player is playing lazy defense and there are fouls when a player is just playing hard. Likewise with turnovers -- sometimes the Rockets have a turnover that is egregious, but mostly their high turnovers are a function of a playing style that has them drive to the basket a lot -- and the more they drive to the basket the better their offense functions, despite the increased in turnovers that also results. This may also help explain the slow start to the season. It is counter intuitive for a team to play this way. Turnovers are traditionally a sacrosanct stat. Caution and mid range jump shots are a dogma. So integrating a Howard as a huge part of the such a team is going to be difficult. It is going to look really good at times when they are performing according to the plan, and really bad when they are trying and failing to perform according to the plan. And as the season goes along they get a better and better understanding with each other (the players that is) how each of them can fit into the offensive philosophy of the team. That defense though.........
Sooooo... more TO's = more possessions = faster pace? Which would mean we do better when playing uptempo and pushing the ball. Makes sense
Going off ESPNs numbers coming into tonight we were tied with Miami for 2nd worst in TO ratio. As frustrating as they seem in real time I guess turnovers aren't the end of the world.
If you throw a pass that will result in a near 100% shot (e.g. Dwight dunk) 5 times, and turn it over twice, it's the same value as a 40% 3 point shooter shooting 5 times. A good turnover is when you're trying to create really high % shots with those passes or moves, a bad turnover is when you meekly throw the ball to the opponent.
Well we do have 3 t/o kings on the team lin, harden and dwight. But they are talented in scoring so doesnt matter much
That's an amazing stat, even small sample size. I wonder what is our record when we have less than said 12TPG (we avg 15.4 for the season so far).
The fact that the Rockets won last night while committing 16 more total turnovers and attempting 33 less shots is insane.
There are bad turnovers and not so bad turnovers. Offensive fouls, and violations(travelling, 24 second, 3 second) are actually better than missed shots because it prevents any chance of a transition basket. Turnovers are only worse than missed shots if they lead to transition buckets. Getting the ball stolen at the top of the circle is the worst type of turnover because it almost always leads to a dunk on the other end.
We're better when we push the pace. I guess some of our turnovers come from pushing too hard. To me, well, I can live with those. What drives me nuts are the stagnant TOs. We really, really need to cut those down. In my book, desperation shots at or after the shot clock expiration are as bad as TOs-- unless we're just killing clock in a clear W.
Agreed. The TOs from passing to Howard on the block should just not happen that much (Lin). I'm actually fine with majority of Harden's TOs because they are usually non-calls from refs when he's driving. Only time that it annoys me is when he dribbles on the perimeter then get picked. Howard's post-up TOs I'm ambivalent about. I just don't know it's that efficient of a play.
Lin needs to be allowed to score when he's feeling it. I feel like he gets those bad turnovers when his body language shows that he's in attack mentality but is scared to not follow his ast orders.
Say what you will, but that was a ridiculously sloppy game. We were lucky to escape our futility. I can't remember the amount of time we had a cross court pass intercepted. They just double team Howard and play the passing lanes. Ariza's amazing streak made them look better than they are but still we should have won that game by 20.
Can't we just look at the games in question? I feel like they turn the ball over more against mediocre/bad teams, gene the wins anyway... But that's just observational.
