So pleased to hear former Rocket great Jim Petersen on the Wolves' broadcast last night. For the youngins, Pete was Chandler Parsons 1.0. My sister had an autographed shoe of his on her bedroom doorknob. Aka he slayed boy band ass. Anyone else attend the greatness of Jim Petersen basketball camp back in the day? One day Clyde came, and I answered some trivia questions for the right to get to request a dunk from the Glide. I asked for like a 360 reverse windmill from the free-throw line. He was all, "Nah I'll just do this..." Then he repeated something Worrell and Bull said. I don't remember, it was a long time ago. Big ups to Pete!
Petersen was a good, solid, important player but he was no Chandler Parsons. He was mostly a backup center/PF. Parsons can handle and distribute and could run the offense if need be. Petersen could do none of those things. Petersen took 28 3 pointers in his career. That's a 5 game stretch for Parsons.
The comparison is not about their basketball roles, it's about their role as "the handsome white guy" on the team. Petersen is one of the better local TV guys. Knowledgable and unbiased. I recall that he replied to a Minny fan on twitter once who was irritated at the a Blazers TV team for being terrible homers. Petersen asked the fans to forgive these guys because it's not their fault since some teams order their broadcasters to be extremely biased toward the home team and the Wolves don't. Petersen also has great affection for the Rockets and Kevin McHale (both played at the U of Minnesota and worked together for the Wolves).
Pretty sure he was comparing their "game" and not their "basketball game" when referring to JP as Chandler Parsons 1.0 .
Was Peterson the one who made a running rainbow shot from half court that they used to use for the Rockets broadcast intro before games in the late 80's/early 90's? I think it was when they were on 20 Vision.
Holy crap! I just realized that I've been on CF for exactly 10 years now. 33 posts in 10 years! Does that make me the Chuck Nevitt of CF?
Been enjoying him for years as Wolves' commentator. Some years back I think him and Clyde switched booths for a couple of segments. Not really a fair trade.
Off the top of my head, I remember Portland and Philly have pretty fair announcers too. Anyone else got any other ones?
He was. Another cool Jim Petersen story... Went to his summer camp a couple of years in a row. I was a goofy, practically talentless middle schooler. One of hundreds of kids. A few years later, I'm at the All-Star game at the Astrodome. I see Petersen up ahead and holler out to him. Dude turns around, recognizes me, and even remembers my name. Like a boss. Minnesota people are cool like that.
