Did the Rockets start running the football to kill the clock too early?

Ask Drexler how the Cougars lost the NCAA championship 30 years ago.

When teams are in the "kill the clock" mode, they almost have to run either an iso or a simple action rather than any normal offensive schemes involving multiple actions. Why throw the ball around looking for openings when you are determined to not take a shot before there are 5 or 6 seconds left on the clock?

There really isn't much scheming around these possessions. The team holds the ball, then get into something simple with maybe 8 or 9 seconds left and then a shot goes up shortly after that.

    Good thread.

We do seem to have problems closing out games. Interested to see some of the feedback here.

For me, I'm still hoping for a PG upgrade. Somebody that's not necessarily a "closer" in the traditional sense (takes over games, scores, etc), but more so somebody that will protect the ball, focus on feeding the post, great shooter and can play above average defense. Basically, a Lowry type.

Yeah that was painful. Still feel the hurt after 3 decades. That was probably Guy Lewis's worst coaching decision.

They did run pick and roll last game. Specifically, they ran an 1-2 pick and roll with Lin and Harden that tended to force opponents to switch in past games. The Buck did not switch, so they had Harden set another pick, Lin drive the ball and had to pull up for a jumper and missed-- no time left to explore other options.

They also posted up Howard during one of these possessions-- got him the ball with like 8 ticks left on the clock. He got a hook shot and missed.

It wasn't all iso for the team, but the point remains that you just don't have the time to do much other than a simple action and must get a shot up within a short window. By voluntarily eating a portion of the clock, a team lowers its chances to score.

Other team will just double Dwight every time he touches the ball. They know we're a poor 3-point shooting team, and force us to beat them from outside.

The more obvious problem is that they will foul Dwight if they go to him on a post up at the end of the game. He has shot better from the line the past week or so, but he will have to keep it up for a much longer time to feel confident of that option in the last 2 minutes.

For me personally, I feel like killing the clock whenever you have a 5+ lead is to your advantage. 5+ lead means that it is a 2-3 possession ball game.

The key to basketball is to whoever have the higher point at the end of the game. If you can stretch out the time that you have the lead, theoretically you have a higher chance of having the higher points at the end because the majority of the game time, you have a higher point differential.

This strat I believe is best to use when the bench is in if you have a weak bench. It allows clock to be burn and your bench's inept offensive power is hidden within the limited possession.

(random example from the top of my head) your bench score 1.2 ppp and the opposing bench score 1.5 ppp. If you limit the total possession from 40 to 20 and (assuming both side get equal amount of possession so offensive and defensive rebounds are controlled) there will only be a 3 point differential instead of 6 for the opposing team. This allows the starters to come back into a ball game that isn't too lopsided.
