Does Buying a Ticket to a Sporting Event Entitle a Fan To Behave Like a Dick?

The Tech official youtube vid is out. Sounds like the fan called Smart a "piece of crap." Fan agreed not to go to anymore games this year, Smart suspended 3 games, and both apologized.

 

Video is not conclusive either way as other words could have been said.

looks like the racial slur bit was cooked up to cover Smart's actions...

 

Either way a 40+ year old man calling a 19 year old college athlete anything is pretty much a huge loser.

No, you do not get to verbally abuse people because you buy a ticket. When you buy a ticket, you have a right to your seat to watch a ball game and cheer for your team...that's all.

There are reports saying that the Tech fan is the same guy who threw something at A&M coach Tony Barone years ago and getting into a physical altercation with A&M center Bryan Davis. If true, this fan has a long history of crossing the line.

 

Back in the day (college), we used to bring an old, beat-up couch to the soccer field to support our team. We'd paint up, chug vodka with a Jolly Rancher (don't ask), and get a copy of the program so we could taunt the players closest to our sideline by name.

The school subsequently banned couches at the stadium, started checking drinks a little more carefully, and stopped printing the opposing players names in the program.

On the one hand, it was really fun to get under the skin of the opposing team. On the other, it really offended their families. Which, incidentally, made it even more fun.

We were definitely ruthless. We taunted people's moms. You name it, I'm sure we said it at some point. Never led to any sort of altercation, but it seems that the players we picked on most would always do something unbelievable to end the game and rub it in our face. Which they made a point of doing. But when you dish, you gotta take, so we took it.

Now, 20 or so years later, I definitely wouldn't let my kid sit next to college me during a sporting event. And the today me wouldn't do that sort of stuff anymore. So I'm a little surprised that guy's still going at it. But I have a hard time justifying any sort of shock or disgust at the guy. 'cause I know I've said and done worse.

 

If that were the case, many in here would have a lot of bullet holes in them.

 

If you're a grown man with a career, family, mortgage, etc. and you're heckling a college student....I don't know...you might want to re-examine your life.

 

Karma can come and haunt you.
