Yet 17 year old kids are drafted every year in baseball. It's the very antithesis. No one gripes about that league, so shut up about this one.
There's no problem with this if the league is going to continue guaranteeing contracts. They could be more like the NFL. Players wouldn't like that either.
u could say the same with players who got to college 1 year and still could have stayed to mature as men and players ... imo it's not a question of age, ur ready or not, more a mental / physical thing, and some ppl can b ready at 18, others at 22 (not the same thing but look in soccer, Messi, Fabregas, started to play w/ their team at 15/16, and there r many other examples)
The league salary cap is the same regardless of whether a player starts at 18 or 20. If the college guy isn't getting paid, then someone else is.
they have numerous players in their mid-teens in europe playing pro ball and it's not a problem. the only issue here in the nba is the league office trying to keep owners from screwing themselves with empty years from developing players, as well as outright lottery busts. so they are essentially shutting out all teenagers in order to keep stupid franchises from continuing to practice stupidity. sounds about right for a league that can't even figure out how to properly officiate a game.
Some players have lost millions because of the current age limit. Just look at Shabazz Muhammad. He was supposed to be the #2 pick coming out of high school. After his year of college where his flaws were exposed, he dropped all the way to 14. When players have the top 5 pick status they need to be able to have the option to go out and get the money. If not they are the ones losing the money. Obviously teams like the rule but players will never go for it.
The NBA wants to do what is best for them, which is perfectly reasonable, and also what is best for fans. As for the players, if a 19 year old guy doesn't get a roster spot, then someone else does.
I think the Euro Leagues should really look at this opportunity to see if they can start signing players to 3 year deals outside of high school (See Brandon Jennings). Imagine having a guy like Lebron even for one year in the Euroleague, and what it can do for that league.
How many 17 year old teens get to start for the big major team? They spend most of their time in AA or AAA.
They should let guys jump from HS to college. The problem is that it's harder for teams to scout and judge HS players effectively. This isn't some altruistic thing for rookies, it's to help the teams not end up with busts (which dies benefit everyone though)
i love it. solves the ncaa one and done issue as well. and may help prevent tanking so far as high school prospects are concerned. and...wait for it...the players get to, gasp, DEVELOP, before entering the league
The success rate of a player that went to college is not any high than a player coming out of high school. There are just as many college players that do nothing
Good. Wouldn't be disappointed if they went to 21. Half of these kids ain't ready anyways. They like to think they are but they aren't.
They really should and players out of high school should be more open to it. They would not only get paid but compete with much better players
