3s & D trade possibilities: - Either Trevor Ariza or Martell Webster (the Wiz need to create minutes for recent #3 overall pick Otto Porter) - Tony Allen - Iman Shumpert - Mike Dunleavy - Jordan Hamilton - C.J. Miles - Anthony Morrow The asking price on Shumpert and Dunleavy will be prohibitive. Ariza is a VERY logical trade target, especially if Washington wants to acquire either Jeremy Lin or Omer Asik. Washington will NOT keep both Ariza and Webster around beyond this season (again, they need to create a spot for Porter), and both Ariza and Webster are good players. The dark horses here are Jordan Hamilton and C J. Miles, both of whom can be acquired for next to nothing.
Let's try something a little bit more original. Asik, Lin and Brewer for Stoudemire and Hardaway Jr. Then Houston activates Marcus Camby for the playoffs. That's a lot of experience and good second unit size in the middle for the playoffs. Hardaway Jr. will obviously become a Harden class player in year or two.
Taking Stoudemire off their hands for Lin and Asik won't require a pick from us. They'd be cheering. I'd take Shumpert instead of Hardaway Jr though.
We really don't need a 3-and-D role player, we have enough back court and wing players as it is. Harden, Parsons, Beverly, and Lin all average 30+ minutes, together that's already 140 minutes out of the 144 minutes for the 1-2-3 positions. These players just need to play better defense (Harden in particular was a gaping (a)hole on D earlier this season, but he is playing OK defense now). If Asik can come back and play 20 minutes a game, we'll be set. The most exciting thing to see this season is the emergence of TJones as a solid star for the team. He gives us the much-needed power forward we can rely on. He is more of a mobile attack-the-basket offensive force than the prototypical stretch-four, but heck I like his aggressiveness. I'd like to see Casspi and DMo getting fewer minutes, they are simply soft jump shooters with horrendous defense and no rebounding. I'd play Greg Smith before those two.

Things we need to become contenders: 1) Upgrade the PG spot by turning one of Lin/Beverley/Brooks to a Lowry/Dragic level of talent 2) Get a two-way wing player that can at the very least shoot well from 3 and play good defence to replace Garcia in the rotation, eg an Afflalo/Ariza/Schumpert type 3) Upgrade the back-up PF/C spot by turning Asik/Dmo into a good defensive big that can play next to Howard when we face big teams like the Memphis or back him up without a big drop-off in defense, eg Amir Johnson/ Ed Davis / Varejao / Hawes 4) Upgrade the coaching staff. McHale does not have the basketball nous to build sophisticated offensive and defensive schemes. He still could be a coach of a championship team as the figurehead/leadership type, if he had someone like Thibodeau/JVG in his staff Our assets are Lin, Asik, DMo, Canaan, Casspi and picks (I think we can'trade the 2014 1st round pick due to the Harden trade and we owe one to Atlanta till 2018, otherwise we owe all our 1st round picks). Our starting line-up would be Lowry/Harden/Parsons/TJones/Howard and we would have something like Beverley, Afflalo, Varejao (he is probably the most talented of the bunch, but injury prone, so perhaps Amir Johnson would be a safer choice) as our key bench guys with Brooks, Garcia, Casspi, Smith playing depending on situation. Perhaps we could do a 3-way trade with Cleveland and Orlando, where we send Asik/Brewer/2nd round pick to the Cavs, Waiters/Dmo/Canaan/Covington/Houston 1st round pick go to Orlando and we receive Varejao and Afflalo. Then send Lin/2nd round pick to the Raptors for Lowry. If need be, we can through our rights to Papanicolaou and Casspi to the mix. That would be my dream. If Morey can make it happen, he would be a god.

Houston gets a guy they were interested in during the offseason, someone who's always been at his best as a slashing/small-ball 4. They also get to hold onto Jones and get a credible backup C in Plumlee. Phoenix gets a big upgrade over Plumlee in Asik, a strong defensive big who can gobble up rebounds (they're currently ranked 26th in DReb%), and an intriguing young PF prospect in DMo. While they give up that 1st Rounder, WAS looks like a lock for the playoffs this year, and the Knicks are bad enough that those two second rounders hold quite a bit of value. If Detroit really wants to abort the Drummond/Monroe/Smith experiment, this is a deal I'd do. I'd even consider replacing NYK's 2015 2nd rounder with our 2015 1st rounder (the Knicks could potentially be terrible next year, and a high 2nd rounder is arguably more valuable than a low 1st rounder). I think Smith can be a very effective player in a system that plays to his strengths.

Sound crazy , doesn't it. Let's take a little closer look at it. Lin and Asik are owed at the moment about $34 mil and Stoudemire approx. $32 mil until the end of their contracts. However, Stoudemire will be a huge expiring next season, while Lin and Asik will be fairly small because of the structure of the contract. Hardaway Jr. can be had for 4 years (or Shumpert the next season) for very small money. So, in terms of money spent Stoudemire would be cheaper. The first question here is Stoudemire's health. Will he be able to contribute as a reserve C/PF. So far he has done not bad in the Knicks. Much better than Asik in the Rockets. If Camby would be also available as his backup, I think he would contribute. He played very Rocket like BB in Phoenix. The second question is, will Hardaway Jr. be able to fill the loss of Lin? That is a very difficult question, but today Hardaway Jr. looks like a steal for the money he makes. So, when you look at it a bit more closely, it is not such a bad deal, especially, when you need cap space sometime next season to sign Parsons. Stoudemire can be waived or retire when the time comes.

Asik+2nd Rounder for Varejao is what I would do its a safe trade we get what we need plus a bit more. Then we just hope the rest of the bench performs better into the playoffs(Garcia). Varejeos minutes would go down as well since he would be a backup so his lingering injuries wont be to bad,with the added improvement of DMO he has been growing into a decent role player I think we will be okay for this season. Next year will be the year we would really contend. We wait for the draft we use our remaining 2nd round picks on a SG/SF. Bev/Lin Harden/Garcia Parsons/Casspi Jones/DMO Howard/Varejeo

Josh Smith's contract is for sure one of the ten worst contracts in the league. His perimeter shooting is some of the worst perimeter shooting in NBA history. And he is a primadonna. I cannot believe any team's fan would want to trade for him. If Joe Dumars does not get fired, that organization has quite simply given up. If Dumars does get fired, dumping Smith's contract is the first order of business. Detroit will be fortunate to receive an expiring contract for Smith. Anyway, 0% chance that Daryl Morey trades for Josh Smith. I do agree that Phoenix badly needs to upgrade at C, and Asik is a BIG upgrade over Plumlee. Phoenix is on the short list of Asik trade partners. I think Asik winds up in either Phoenix or Charlotte.
