Interesting that CVS loses around $800 million of market capitalization today on the news... while Walgreens gains around $2 billion of market capitalization today. Obama weighing in on the matter suggests that this was coordinated with the White House. So it's reasonable to conclude that CVS will recieve some type of political kickback/benefit in the coming months. This White House really takes the American public for fools by thinking that they have credibility on this issue -- given that Obama himself is a smoker.
The joke's on CVS. Who has the money to buy a whole pack of cigarettes. I buy loosies anyways from the corner man.
Lucky you. I've had to throw away full packs of smokes because drunk me gets the urge, I smoke one and wake up to a full pack in disgust and throw them away. I've probably do this three times a year.
My friends the same way. He's not addicted, nor likes the taste of a cigarette, but if he's drinking or is drunk he'll smoke a couple cigs. Next day, he won't even be asking for any.
They're going to lose a ton of business this way, it's not like people buying cigarettes affects my experience there (not like smoking in a restaurant where I might actually patronize them for not having smoking). My roommate's going crazy since CVS is the only pharmacy near us and he's a pack a day smoker.
See, I think it's the opposite: this is TONS of free publicity for CVS, they come across looking like the pharmacy that really cares about customer health (whether or not that's really the case) and for every person who says they WON'T patronize CVS because of this, there are already lots of posts circulating on FB with folks saying they WILL patronize CVS because of this. I think in the long run they'll come out ahead.
Kinda like cigs I guess. Slight nicotine buzz. Not sure how I even picked up this habit as the first time I tried it in college I puked like 5 times...
You're right. This is a branding move. And smokers? Who cares about them. Show me 10 smokers and I'll show you 7 people with very little or no disposable income. They're not shopping at CVS anyway. Seen their prices compared to Walmart?
I'll bet Walgreens could make lots more money selling guns. Are you upset that they are not meeting the needs of their customers and passing judgment by not selling guns?
CVS refusing to sell cigarettes is going to have as much of an impact on smokers as an increased tax.
