Freeman has always been garbage...??? Are you racist or something...??? Because Freeman actually did have a good year or two in Tampa before he fell off. Cassel has ONLY been good for one year in New England with McDaniels calling the plays.

You want to replace one quarterback who lead a team to a 2-14 record with another quarterback who lead KC to a 2-14 record and all KC did was replace him.

But the Texans would probably be better off with Case than going after either one of them.

Matt Cassell = one year wonder in the perfect circumstance. What has he done lately? Exactly. I would rather give Keenum a shot at the backup position.

Freeman had one decent year but his completion percentage was awful down at 54.8% and if you adjust his interceptions to take luck out of the equation by counting dropped interceptions and discounting "hail mary" style passes and interceptions that were caused by the ball being tipped, he should have had 24 interceptions that year. He might have had one or two decent years, but he never had a good year.

You can say the same things about Matt Stafford who had a 58% completion percentage this year _ but I don't hear you calling him garbage (which he is)...

Cassel hasn't done ANYTHING away from the comforts and good team he was on in New England besides lead a team to a 2-14 record. Signing him would be just throwing away money.

LOL, Stafford's 2011 season buys him a lot of leeway, when you throw for within 50 yards of the previous record in a season that stood for over 25 years in your first full season as a starting QB with a completion percentage over 63 and over 40 TD's then you don't get compared to garbage like Freeman.

Give me the guy with one absolutely great season, one good season, and one decent season over the kid who topped out at decent.

The whole talk about how Cassel hasn't done all that much away from the NE system is even more reason why he might be a candidate.....because he'd be back in that system and he'd be a league minimum guy.

Stafford's great season had A LOT to do if not EVERYTHING to do with Calvin Johnson because all Stafford does is throws balls up for grabs...

But you go head and hold on to the belief that Cassel can do what he did in New England here... Just like Kansas City had that belief.

Okay, let's take this nonsense in two parts.

LOL, okay, so where did the other 3357 yards come from? I'm guessing you are just trying to be a contrarian because usually you are at least a little better than this.

Okay, and you keep arguing with that straw man. When you're done we can talk.

Calvin Johnson demands constant and sometimes triple coverage so the rest of the field is wide open. And this year Stafford had two good running backs with Bush and Bell to go along with Johnson and he still couldn't get the job done. And since having the great year you're talking about _ Stafford has been regressing every since so all signs point to that one year being a fluke.

And as far as Cassel goes... If O'Brien goes with him over Case, then I have my concerns about him.

Pickings are slim at veteran quarterback, as usual

Matt Cassel: Cassel didn’t walk away from $3.7 million in Minnesota because he thinks he’ll get less elsewhere. He’ll make more as the short-term starter in Houston (where he would be reunited with former Pats assistant Bill O’Brien) or as the full-season answer in Oakland. At worst, Cassel will make slightly more as the veteran backup to an established starter.

Matt Schaub: With former Texans offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland, some think Schaub will land there if/when he’s cut by the Texans. With a $10 million salary, it’s likely more “when” than “if” Schaub gets the heave-ho in Houston. At best, he’ll keep a spot warm somewhere for a rookie, providing protection against the possibility that the newcomer won’t be ready — and a little in-house competition to help get him there.

    JLC:

The Vikings, 49ers, Bucs and Texans are also exploring free agent options. If Matt Cassel does not return to Minnesota, Houston is seen as a likely landing spot for him.

You could do worse than Cassel as a stop-gap. I certainly wouldn't mind him at the right price.

Texans interested in Cassel, Cassel interested in Texans

When Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel opted out of the second year of his contract, passing on the chance to make $3.7 million in 2014, the dot-connecting process began.

And the brightest line connected the former Chiefs starter to Bill O’Brien in Houston.

Cassel led the Patriots to an 11-5 record during O’Brien’s only season as receivers coach in New England. The following year, Cassel landed in Kansas City and O’Brien became the de facto offensive coordinator in New England, replacing Josh McDaniels. (O’Brien wouldn’t get the title until 2011.)

Now, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that mutual interest exists between Cassel and the Texans.

Unless the Texans don’t plan to draft a quarterback in round one (or two), Cassel at best would be a Kurt Warner (New York, not Arizona) placeholder for the rookie, possibly yielding the position as early as the pick is officially made. And Cassel is smart enough to know that he wouldn’t be playing for very long, if at all, if the Texans end up with Teddy Bridgewater or Blake Bortles or Johnny Manziel.

That said, serving as the placeholder and mentor to a rookie could be Cassel’s best bet. Though he played well in 2013, having a direct role in each of the Vikings’ five wins, any team that would make him the starter from the moment he signs also could be taking a quarterback in rounds one or two, necessarily making Cassel’s tenure at the top of the depth chart a short one.

Seems to me like we may be after Garoppolo. If we are, we should just renegotiate Schaub down to a tiny contract and let him mentor Keenum and Jimmy.

We would have more money that way, and a better mentor, in my opinion.
