Sometimes I wonder if people here really get how great JJ Watt is. Which is odd because usually people here overrate our players. Watt is literally the best defensive player in the game today. Why would you trade him for any other player straight up?
Maybe Im just a homer but I can't think of 1 player I would trade watt for, as stated above maybe Andrew Luck…maybe.
This. You'd probably have to do it for Rodgers simply because he's just young enough to be worth it. Brees, Brady and Manning are too old. I think you'd have to consider Luck but I'm a bit sketchy on him. JJ Watt is the best non QB in the league, it's probably best you just hold on to someone as talented and high character as he is.
I agree that Watt is phenomenal. But getting that franchise QB gets you in contention for years, Watt alone does not. QB is so crucial in the modern NFL. Also, the useful life (amount of quality years) is greater for a QB than a pass rusher. So when you take a young Andrew Luck as your franchise QB, you are always in contention, look what he's done with a pretty poor Colts supporting cast so far. Now, if you personally don't like Luck, that's one thing, but you have to recogonize that QB is the most essential single position in the game right now, and upgrading heavily at that position for a long time is something you can't pass up.
build the D around Watt! and you can crush any 'elite' qb. Proven time after time. The key is in the pudding.
most "elite" qb's win super bowls during their younger years when they're on rookie contracts because it allows their team to spend money on other positions to put real talent around them. because of the salary cap once an elite qb gets that elite qb money it cripples their team in the future to where they don't have money to spend in other places. so many times these super elite qb's wind up with below average defenses and have all the pressure on them to win. it's best to build up everything other than the qb up to top tier level then bring in a young qb in the later rounds instead of having a young qb on the rise to stardom struggle throughout his young years then wind up putting up 4500+ yard seasons with 40+ touchdowns making $100 million and consistently struggle in the playoffs because the team around him sucks.
Luck is cheap, because he still has his rookie contract, wait 2 more years. and I would prefer have russell wilson over luck. (obviously wouldnt trade any of them for Watt)
I would trade Watt for Earl Thomas. Sorry, but FS is more important & has a bigger impact in this day & age of NFL.
