bobby missed the point? in this day & age of professional defense you build your defense through safeties and linebackers. you neglect the fact that seattle's defense begins and ends with their secondary (mainly their safeties and sherman) & their LB's ability to adequately cover TE's. Their best pass rushers (bennett and avril) were acquired through free agency. WE ARE NOTHING LIKE THE SEAHAWKS!!!! Not one player in our secondary could sniff Seattle's starting line up, and probably not their roster. And sorry, Cushing isn't starting over Wagner either. Fix the secondary & lb position, and the pass rush will thrive.
That's one way to build a defense, but it's not the only way to build a defense. Seattle won with an out of this world secondary and a good D line, I'm proposing an out of this world line and a good secondary. Two ways to achieve the same goal.
Fix the pass rush and the corners won't have to cover guys for too long either. The Giants won two superbowls with a great Dline first. Either way, you HAVE to get pressure somehow. Either by your LBs or your DEs...you need to pressure the QB or I don't care how good your CBs are, they can't cover great WRs for too long.
It wasnt that the secondary wasnt great today, they were able to make plays based on the tremendous effort upfront. Manning rarely got touched during the regular season, but he was abused upfront because the Broncos line couldnt prevent the Seahawks dline from wrecking havoc. Avril, Clemons, Mebane, Bennett applied tremendous amounts of pressure upfront...the 2 picks and a fumble was a direct result of pressure from upfront. Finally the key to the Seahawks 2ndary success is having a guy like Kam Chancellor(ala Benard Pollard with coverage skills) and Earl Thomas(ie the intellectual) patrolling the field. They are the modern day Lewis and Reed tandem. They understand progressions on the field and its impact. The Houston Texans in order to replicate success, have to find a way to get a terrific Free Safety in the second round.
I hate to say it everybody but we are not hitting a home run in one off season. Teddy b or clowney or JFF won't fix all of our problems. It's all going to come down to how the front office and BOB 50/50 want to build this team it's about laying a foundation first. We can become competitive again of course but Super Bowl not too soon sorry. I have noticed everybody including myself saying do this do that and all our problems are solved. In reality we are forgetting the little things like mental makeup, attitude, identity etc. under kubiak we never really had a identity practiced worked played or acted like champions. With BOB I think all of these things change. Whoever we get first overall I'm ok with because I'm come to realize they can't be a hero by themselves so I just hope we get it right continue to build up our talent and do things the right way and be first class and champions in everything we do success will come sooner than later.
A defense in any day or age begins with the front 7, a they can take even the best QBs out of their game.nd the amount of time an opposing QB is given in the pocket. Even the best secondary will struggle if there's no pressure. Both of Manning's interceptions were tipped at the line, because of constant pressure Seattle's front.
I don't know what you're trying to argue here... Seattle's defense is all about their LB's & Secondary. Just stop it with your ridiculous posts.
Wait, you're saying you failed when trying to follow along with an argument? I'll alert the media at once.
Put it this way guys: Do you think Seattle's defense would be better or worse if you replaced their D Line with our D line, and by how much?
They would be significantly worse. Our D line is basically just JJ Watt and they can't get pressure on the QB unless they are blitzing. Seattle's D line is much more effective than that.
wanting bridgewater doesnt mean anyone is against building a great D. im not under the impression that this is a one year fix. however when are we going to have another top 3 pick to potentially grab a franchise potential qb? im willing to bet there will be several impact ''front 7'' players available where ever we will be drafting in the next couple of years. likely in the top 15 assuming guys comeback healthy i dont see a situation like this past season where we win only 2 games and are in front position to draft this everyones hero famous jameis or even mariotta..
it's hard to say because our scheme with wade was dramatically different than the scheme seattle uses. anybody who claims to have this answer is a true idiot.
I'm arguing your statement, "in this day & age of professional defense you build your defense through safeties and linebackers." That's why I quoted it in the first place. I'm saying Seattle won because their defense dominated the line of scrimmage, not because of elite secondary play. You're saying they're built from the back. I'm saying successful defenses start by controlling the line of scrimmage, so you build from the front. Do you understand yet?
And the majority of that defense was built through the draft in the mid to later rounds. I think there are one or two 1st/2nd round picks on that defense, that's it. The Seahwak's have done a nice job of building depth in the draft in rounds 3-7. Something the Texans have failed at miserably.
Here's a stat for you... Out of 51 drop backs by Manning, Seattle only blitzed 6 times. That shows how dominate the defensive line of Seattle is because they can just rush 4 and get pressure and drop everyone else back in coverage so I couldn't agree with you more...
You are right, wanting Bridgewater does not mean that you don't want to build a great D but it does mean that you want to pass on the top player in the draft to chase a QB which IMO means you failed to learn the lesson of the last 2 SB's. Which is exactly the case for Clowney, you can completely shut down the greatest offense in the history of the league if you can pressure the QB without having to blitz. A dominant O line that can get pressure without blitzing and a competent to good secondary trumps anything the offense does.
San Francisco is a good example because their cornerbacks aren't better than ours and when they're #1 pass rusher went missing with drug issues they didn't miss a beat because their defensive line was so strong. It does make a case for Clowney, but it also makes the case that we have to get a big bull in the middle of that defensive line.
He may be there in a late round. May be a nice player to add next to J.J., seems like another high motor guy. I like DeAndre Coleman out this draft as well.
