It's been a long month debating with Bridgewater & Manziel fanatics, so I wanted to come here and quote one of my first takes on the topic of our #1 pick. I think it just got a little stronger tonight.
One side: Seahawks just proved you can win & build your defense in the later rounds. Don't draft Clowney! The other: Seahawks just proved you can win with a non-first round QB. Don't draft [Bortles/Bridgewater/Manziel]!
Yup, every once in a while people forget that defense wins championships, not QB's. Have a great QB? Awesome, but unless your defense is up to snuff you probably aren't winning the big game.
I think what we just learned from the Seahawks is multiple big cornerbacks can be drafted late and become game breakers alongside a fast front 7.
compare to us DE JJ Watt 1st Round DT Earl Mitchell 3rd Round DE Antonio Smith 5th Round LB Whitney Mercilus 1st Round LB Brian Cushing 1st Round LB ??? Sharpton/Mays LB Brooks Reed 2nd Round CB Johnathan Joseph 1st Round CB Kareem Jackson 1st Round FS DJ Swearinger 2nd Round SS Daniel Manning 2nd Round 5 first rounders and 3 2nd rounders.. with the potential to add a 6th 1st rounder in clowney.. weve spent 8 of our 11 of our franchises total 1st round draft picks on defensive players..
Solution is to keep trading down till we only have 2nd and 3rd round picks. Just have to worry about Rick Smith missing on all of them.
HA! You think "the lesson" is to use lower picks on defense? Wow. You never fail to miss the point. It doesn't matter where you draft them, you need defensive talent to win. If you can manage to get them in the late rounds, more power to you, but the only thing that matters is that you get that talent.
LOL, I figured the Brigewater followers would lose it when it was shown yet again that defense wins championships
It's like DM speaking of "market inefficiencies". You could get big corners in later rounds, and draft Russell Wilson in the 3rd because he's too short. After this year you won't be able to do so anymore. At this point, every GM is going to be doing their best Seahawks impression. In the Army, they say that the generals are always planning to fight the last war. This means, they learn lessons about fighting in, say, the jungles of Vietnam, but the next war is in the deserts of the Middle East, where the conditions are totally different. Don't fight the last war. Don't figure out where the market inefficiencies were, figure out where they will be in the near future, and exploit them.
So what? That's completely irrelevant it's like pointing out that Tom Brady is a 6th round QB. Where the defense came from doesn't matter, it only matters that they built the right defense. They found a ton of steals in later rounds, that doesn't mean later round defensive players are better than early round defensive players.
Texans lack pass rush. Clowney = Pass rush. I'd expect you to think so considering you were fanatic #1, who freaks out when an opinion doesn't reflect his own.
