Better think again. Melo is a pending free agent. What team is going to offer more value than what Morey would offer to rent Melo for a few months? Go ahead, name the team and the trade please.
Alot of teams. Asik brings very little value. He's still injured and plays same position as Tyson this year. Next year he may bring them some wins which they would rather not have if they trade Melo while costing the owner 15 m. Kind of negative value. Lin would fill seats. But still be realistic, Lin and asik would not get a trade done even if melo said he's leaving.
Example for you dillusional fans who love to overrate our players. Phoenix can offer a first round pick and tucker and okafors contract and another young player or pick. That's a better offer for new York than Houston's.
What first round pick could Phoenix offer Zoplicane? Their own? What good is that pick to the Knicks once Melo is in a Suns uni? It's of no more value than the Rox pick as PHX would be battling the Rox for playoff positioning. Tucker???? Goodness gracious man. He's a JAP. Just another player. Okafor is just dollar matching. Next??!!?!?
Here's the package that Morey could and probably would offer to rent Melo: Asik/Lin/Jones/14 pick/16 pick and maybe even the 18 pick with some sort of protection on it. Now tell me that PHX pick and a couple trash players is better than that. Even if PHX gave up 3 picks....it's not better than that. PHX would have to guarantee the Knicks a lottery pick to even come close to having a better deal on the table for them than that.
If it was that easy, Morey and Les would have completed the trade before Asik got injured. I will give you an example of a possible hypothetical trade that could be useful for the Knicks and the Blazers, which I feel is better than a physically and mentally injured Asik who wouldn't want to be a backup to Tyson Chandler plus Lin and picks. Carmelo and Aldrich to Portland. Batum, Matthews and D.Wright to NY. Portland would be taking a gamble, but Melo would bring them star power along with Aldridge. Portland doesn't even need to go that far. Melo can be traded for Batum and Matthews.
I actually think OKC will get Hawes and Turner, they can give Philly Dallas's and their own Nr.1 pick along with Jeremy Lamb and Perkins whose contract expires next season and they possibly are gonna tank next season anyway so Perkins fits the bill.
Never said it was easy. It's up to the Knicks to come to the realization he is leaving them (which they probably won't until he's gonzo) and decide to preemptively move him. That's the only way Melo gets traded. That's what people coming up with bogus trades have to realize about the Melo situation. IF the Knicks realize he's going to walk from them, THEN they MAY try to trade him. But IF that happens...guess what??? Everybody in the league knows he's walking. So if he's gonna walk....you tell me....who is going to want to rent him for a few months and try to give him a sales job from Feb 21st to the end of the season in hopes of getting him to re-sign with them and give up more than the package that Morey would likely put together for him????? Go ahead,......I'm waiting. You have to understand that situation and the terms under which Melo will be dealt IF he is dealt. With that understanding you've got to look at teams that would have a possibility of keeping him. THat would be the 2 LA teams, Chicago...and possibly Miami since they are a championship team. So...let's examine the possibilities. 1. Lakers - they'd trade for him right now and give up Pau. But Pau is an expiring as well. Knicks won't be interested in that deal without Pau agreeing to an extension. And who knows if they'd be interested in an aging Pau then. But let's assume they are. So you've got a straight swap of Pau from the Lakers. 2. Clippers - well, you're gonna have to look at a swap of Blake Griffin for Melo. That's probably the start and end of Melo to the Clippers deal. Let's assume the Clippers would give up Blake. 3. Chicago - Ummmmmm, find me a trade that Chicago would do that the Knicks would be interested in. Boozer??? When the Bulls are ready to amnesty him?? Bulls aren't giving up Rose. What else they got there. Oh...Charlotte's pick and what's his name in Europe. Oh, and Chicago still has to stuff the Knicks with Boozer and another salary (Gibson or somebody) to make the deal work. So, you've got Boozer/Taj/Charlotte's pick (top 10 protected) and the Euro PF for Melo. Now, here's the deal with Chicago. Why would they trade those assets to NY when they can simply sign Melo in the off-season after amnestying Boozer? Well....you could make the case that they want to win this year's playoffs. So that would be one reason to entice them to give up the pick and the Euro. 4. Miami could toss Bosh at the Knicks. Draft picks aren't worth crap. So Bosh for Melo straight up. ................................................................ So there's your 4 prime candidates. I'll add one more: 5. The Brooklyn Nets - Keeps melo at home. The Nets would probably give up Joe Johnson and some picks for Melo. (Screeeeeeech! Wait...they don't have any picks!) ---------------------------------------------------------- Now those are the most likely possibly trade partners for Melo because they would feel like they can re-sign him. 1. Pau 2. Blake 3. Salary, Charlotte pick, Mirotic's rights 4. Bosh 5. Joe Johnson --------------------------------------------------------------- Folks, those are your probably suitors for Melo if he gets traded. OH, and the Rockets. Asik/Lin/Jones/picks Now the Knicks haven't proven to be very smart. So they could do something very stupid and either not trade him at all or make a bad deal for him. But you tell me...which of those deals give the Knicks any chance of winning a ring? Pau? They aren't going to win anything with Pau and Chandler. Blake? He's not as good as Melo is. Joe Johnson? LOL, good player. But he isn't better than Melo. Chicago's offer if they were even to offer it? Well....that could possibly help the Knicks down the road. Houston's offer......not any less viable than any of these and I could make the case that it is more viable. Asik is on a very reasonable contract that could be dealt for more talent. Or Knicks could keep him and deal Chandler for better fitting pieces around Lin and Asik. But the bottom line is there is not a team out there that can and will offer significantly more than what we can offer.
I seriously think all this Melo business is academic anyway. As good as he is, he's a very expensive ball-stopper, and he's probably not the direction Morey's headed in.
Completely agree. Morey is gunning for something big between now and Feb 20 but the vast majority of suggestions I read on this thread are WAY off. Lots of really bad ideas. Very likely Carmelo stays with the Knicks.
I don't think the Rockets can get him with Asik, Lin, picks or even Jones. I also feel that DM will not go after him, and at the end of this season Melo will probably remain a Knick.
2mid first rd picks would do the Knicks a lot better than asik. They have their pick and washingtons. Len would be a better acquisition than asik. I'm not gonna go on explaining. Just serious question. How valuable is a center who hasn't played all year, has an injury, has been whining all season, and is due to get paid 15 million dollars ? To a team dumping their franchise player nonetheless Yeah you know how the nba works. Keep talking.
And by the way chicagos deal of charlottes pick, Gibson, who you tried to pass off as a throw in yet is better than asik or any of our power forwards, and "what's his name in Europe" makes your Lin/asik blockbuster look like a joke.
Here's the question. Do you really think Chicago would give up all that for Melo when they can sign him in the off season? And if they know they can't sign him in the off season do you think they would give up all that?????? I simply mentioned the teams that would possibly trade for Dwight. There would not be that many suitors. Only a handful. And they likely are not going to be willing to pay very much without Melo committing to stay. Oh, and Asik??? Yes my dear Rockets fan....he still is considerably valuable around the league. He's a top 10 center....worth way more in trade than Taj Gibson is. I do know a little about how the NBA works. Just a little.
You have to realise if NYK trade melo the bobcats will be a playoff team and then that pick is useless
They don't have to offer all of it. They simply have more to offer than Houston, without having to give up rose Noah or butler. And to prove you're wrong and put an end to this argument, if asik is considerable value and worth way more than Gibson, then why was a bass + lee the best offer morey could get? Answer that. Game . Set . Match.
I don't see Lin getting traded. Les loves him for one, and I think Morey has too much credibility at stake with a Lin trade. He already I'm sure took a lot of heat from Les during Linsanity for dropping him and we all know with a high usage Lin can put up really gaudy numbers again and make DM look terrible. Factoring in all of that I think Morey would need a ridiculous package to move Lin and combined with his poison pill and his production dropping since his injury it's pretty unlikely someone offers enough.
If nets didn't tell motet NO in that asik & Lin for dwill trade I could see the nets easily getting that 3rd seed in the east and making it for sure out the first round. & dwill having rockets fans pissed here with that $20mill contract until 2017, Les would've been mad all over again, I'm a 100% sure Lin would've produced in BK imagine kG & ASIK setting screens for him. the rim protection on D, Lin kicking to joe & pierce. Morey dogged a bullet by nets turning down that trade !! They could've traded asik or Lopez also to make them even deeper.
