I like DMo. But he almost lost us the game against the Mavs. At the end there, he fouled the Carter on his 3 point attempt. Plus after that, going for an offensive rebound (at about 22 seconds left), he fouled Dirk. Which meant no time were taken used up by the Mavs to their points. Was just a v silly play, both of them.

of course GMs are going to say that they don't want to trade with Houston: doing so weakens Houston's position in any potential trades. but when push comes to shove, GMs are paid to make their teams better and if there's a mutually beneficial trade with Houston on the table, they are obligated to at least consider it. so if you're a GM in need of a top-5 defensive center and Asik is being offered up to you for a 1st with maybe top 3-6 protection, why wouldn't you take it.
Because Asik could possibly still be injured, it could be a 1.5 year rental with the 2nd year costing 15 million, and the 8th pick could be another Drummond.
Spurs certainly knocked a few of them out of the park: 1.) Finding Tony Parker late in the draft. 2.) FInding Manu late in the draft. 3.) Finding Splitter late in the draft. There has also been quite a few major blunders: 1.) The Steven Jackson signing 2.) The Luis Scola disaster 3.) The Richard Jefferson fiasco 4.) And the late game finals decision making meltdown by Pop which is probably the one most identifiable action (or lack thereof) which single handedly cost a team a championship. More or less they have been riding the drafting of Tim Duncan for the past 20 years. That one event doesn't occur and they are not even in the discussion.
Yeah, Duncan would've helped any organization, but every organization makes draft/trade/signing blunders, Morey's had some doozies. But the good organizations hit more often with personnel decisions than the poor teams, and they have better coaching. Most teams have a superstar player, but most don't contend year after year, it's not just that the Spurs landed Duncan, Pop coaches and enforces team basketball, team defense, and even with the personnel blunders, Pop and the Spurs always eventually make the pieces fit.
You also have the credit the Spurs organization for being able to keep Duncan and their core for those 20 years. How many times have we've seen franchise players leave for another team in the past 2 decades?
Before the trade, Morey was an fool for sticking to his Moreyball tactics of acquiring "assets". After the trade, Morey was back to a genius and/or arrogant. mmmkay. Yawn. Back to reality, I'm still waiting for a Rockets wins streak so we can get home court advantage. Won't happen until we get more healthy and/or Howard finally becomes dominant with 1-2 consistent go-to low post moves (he's making progress but not consistent). James is who he is. A tweak here or there would be nice but he won't help us string together a win streak.
Every GM is going to make mistakes. The mark of a good GM is avoiding the huge mistakes and quietly unraveling the small ones. Amare is a perfect example of this. Morey wanted him, but without that physical, he wasn't going to make the trade. The Knicks didn't seem to care, and they are about to lose Melo because of it. Ariza was a small mistake that Morey quickly fixed. Also, the TWill trade cost us the #16 pick.....hardly a terrible blunder.
Because of James Dolan, the Knicks are hopeless with or without Melo, but I wouldn't be sad if Melo left if I was a Knicks fan.
Yeah. But Orlando drafted Shaq and Howard. Cleveland drafted LeBron. None of them could sustain a 20-year long contending streak. Heck, even the Lakers couldn't do that given their privileged status.
You are putting more weight on what they have done wrong than what they have done right. Every team makes mistakes. You cannot get around it. I'd rather look at what they've done right as opposed to what they've done wrong. What they have done right has vastly out-weighed what they've done wrong.
Arrogance or not, Morey is doing everything he can not to get pennies on the dollar. He's made a huge gamble that he can only get fair value by waiting until the deadline, and he still might be vindicated. The goal, having cap room for 2015, is still the same, and he's not going to kill their chances then in order to help their chances now.
