I'm not even thinking on that level... If he can give us what Mario did that would be good. J.J. is a special player.
True, shame we couldn't see the Mario/Watt combo out So what does this mean? If we don't get a qb #1, do we go after Mallet? Does BOB think he could fix schaub?
Mallett is a possibility if O'Brien knows something we don't, if that's not the case then there are several more rounds of the draft. This is a really deep QB class despite not having any elite QB prospects so there should be some really good one's left by the 2nd and 3rd round. If we go Clowney then Nix in the first 2 rounds then offenses around the NFL would cry.
We don't have a bad secondary, but sure it could use an upgrade or two, and the LB Corps wouldn't be bad, especially since Clowney would likely play OLB and Cushing would be back healthy. However even if Clowney was played as a DE, it wouldn't really matter because Watt, Nix and Clowney require 6 blockers so either one of them are going to have a field day against just one guy, or someone is going unblocked even rushing just 4. With that kind of pass rush, it should make things easy on the secondary
Sure it won't be as good as it's going to get, but the strength and size of guys like Clowney and Nix will always demand a double team. With Nix, we're talking about a 340 pound NT with a very quick first move and a violent bull rush. No center is handling that by themselves play after play. When it comes to Clowney, he's a freak athlete with the strength, speed, and refined pass rush moves that even NFL OT's will struggle with if they don't have help. Most likely Watt will command a Tackle and a Guard, Nix will command the center and a guard and Clowney will command a tackle and either a TE or one of the backs on pure passing downs.
That is the dream scenario if everything works out. Clowney and Nix won't be commanding double teams as rookies heck unless Clowney is Bruce Smith and Nix is Vince Wilfork they wont be commanding double teams
Nix is space eater 3-4 NT, Wilfork esque. You can have average end on either side of him and he will make them look exceptional
That's not really the dream scenario, that's the likely scenario. When you have a NT as big as Nix, you have to double them, you just do and Clowney IS the best defensive prospect since Julius Peppers, so he'll probably be a handful from his very first game. That said, if they do double him from day one, he probably won't have THAT many sacks his rookie year, but his disruption along with Nix and Watt would lead to lots of easy sack opportunities for whoever would be blitzing.
That is ridiculous especially considering they have yet to play a down in the NFL. Nothing is for certain that Nix doesn't get stonewalled by an NFL quality center, and there certainly nothing to guarantee that Clowney won't get stonewalled either.
Clowney is a bull rusher at this point, he is playing using pure physical ability. He has by no means refined pass rushing moves
If they could add Nix and find another 300 lb DE (along with depth behind them) the LBs will be fine... that's 2 big boys on the line with J.J. who have to be doubled and it's only 5 offensive linemen. It's some good corners in this draft too. If they did draft a QB in the first or Sammy Watkins... If Nix falls to the 2nd round they would still have the makings to build an elite defense.
