lol i don't think you understand belichick.. he's the HC and GM.. aka he has final say on football matters. hell, he even manages their salary cap. so.. it's pretty stupid to suggest that anybody other than bilichick is drafting players in NE. idiot.
I'm sure Bill makes the decisions but it's not outside the realm of possibility that he gets input from his coaching staff. Especially his OC who help build the system they run now.
ryan mallet probably owned a pair of platinum fubu jeans.. just saying... lets call a spade a spade..
So you think Bill evaluates every single player himself with no help from anyone else...? And you have the nerve to say I'm not smart...Lol..
I think O'Brien deserves a lot of credit for the current Patriot offense. Don't know this for a fact but the increase in play calling shows a direct correlation with O'Briens time there. Also it's a fact that Belichick met with Chip Kelly twice after OBrien left. Since O'Brien and Chip Kelly are good friends and reports are that theymet very often to discuss offense while at Brown and New Hampshire respectively. I think it's a pretty good bet Belichick wanted to talk with Kelly to discuss things about Kelly's offense that he didn't get so clearly from O'Brien. My stretch is that if he trusted O'Brien that much with the offense it seems to me he might listen to his opinion on what QB might be able to run it. Just a hunch but it makes sense and might be true. Of course none of us outsiders no for sure.
saying "mallet is OB's guy because OB was with the Pats when they drafted him" is gross speculation. All you have to do is read what OB says in regards to what he wants in a franchise qb, and you will realize it's everything that Mallet is not. belichick has a long history of poor draft picks, and i chalk up mallet as one.
O'Brien was OC when the Pats drafted Aaron Hernandez. Does that mean we should pencil him in as our big FA aquisition this offseason? The Pats draft strategy is throw a bunch of crap against the wall and see what sticks. That is why they are always trading back to pick up extra picks. As part of that strategy, they take players when they present a good value. Hernandez and Mallett are two classic examples of the Pats' strategy of picking up junk for cheap off the "scratch and dent" pile. They are the most mercenary team in the league when it comes to personnel. They don't mind bringing someone in and cutting their @ss as soon as they become more trouble than they are worth. My assumption is that since O'Brien has had plenty of up close and personal time with Mallett, he probably knows enough to not want him, in spite of the talent.
I am not saying Mallet is or was OB's guy. All I am saying is he probably had some input in the drafting of him. His input may have been I don't like him. I don't know nor do any of us. I watched some video on Mallet and while I do not want him. I think he has some skills. The fact is O'Brien knows more about Mallet than any of us. So if he wants him and gets him I'm going to be okay with it and wait and see. O'Brien did say he wanted a veteran. Unfortunately, O'Brien hadn't watched a lot of film on Bridgewater when he said that. My personal opinion is O'Brien has probably seen a lot of Bridgewater since and likes what he sees. After he interviews him I think he might realize we don't need a very good veteran because Bridgewater is good enough to quickly come in and take off running. I also think he may like Keenum's intelligence and go with that and maybe a vet on the cheap. So need for mallet or anyone else that is going to cost us. Of course just my opinion and I have no insiders info here.
Funny how the Patriots have heen drafting players like that and trading for players like that since Bill has been in New England. And they seem to always be in the mix for super bowl contention. Bob McNair likes to draft good citizens for the community and choir boys and look where we're at.
My assumption is that since O'Brien has had plenty of up close and personal time with Mallet, we need to be prepared for the possibility that he wants him, in spite of the character issues.
The way I've heard it is that there are VERY few people involved in the decision making process. Scouts do their evaluations and make their reports. In most organizations, they'll meet with the coaches and GM to dicuss players and have the opportunity to "sell" the coach on certain players. None of that **** in New England. Scouts don't even get in the same room with Belichick. Coaches may not either, certainly not all of them. And there's nothing like "JJ Watt was a Wade Phillips pick" tupe thing. Everything is a Belichick pick. I don't know if OB got to be one of 3 or 4 people who got to talk with Bill about these things. He certainly could be but it's entirely possible he wasn't. Also, it's possible OB liked Mallett coming out of college but it's also possible that he wasn't big on him and Belichick made the decision to draft him anyway. That wouldn't be outof character for him..
Did OB say that? I know it's something McNair has put out there, but I can't remember if I've heard OB say it. Regardless, I don't think of Mallett as a "vet" QB. When people talk about wanting to bring in a vet, it's usually because they want them to play in front of a freshly drafted rookie. It's someone who's been around for awhile. Someone who has actually played quite a bit unlike Mallett who has barely played at all. If you bring in Mallett, it's not going to be to mentor a rookie. He's 25 and hasn't played. He has no first hand experience about what it's like to be an NFL starter so he's in no position to mentor anyone. If he's being brought in, it's with he intention that he end his own apprentice phase and become ( hopefully) a long term starter. Not to be the bet mentor to another you g QB.
And it's just as likely that he thinks he sucks as that he thinks he's great. Having time with a player lets you evaluate him - it doesn't mean you favor him.
It would be interesting if we got mallett I would be interested to see how well he can do I'm sure he's been preparing very well learning behind Tom Brady. Also to point out none of the coaches under bilichick have success but they say BOB is different he's his own man. None of Tom Brady's backups have success either maybe mallett can break that mold. It would be fitting if BOB and mallett can prove all these things wrong together.
I know this has been brought up but they should check into seeing what it would take to pry Kirk Cousins from Washington. That guy can be an above average starting qb.
Yes, all that is possible. I only assume that O'Brien may have been in on the process because he helped developed that offense when he got there. But you're right _ he may not have wanted Mallet and Bill drafted him anyway. If they do trade for Mallet _ I believe it would happen before the draft. I think they can start making trades in March. So if draft day rolls around and Mallet isn't here or they haven't signed a free agent QB, we may have more of an ideo of what they may do...
I'm aware of that, but I think the only evidence we have to go by (the fact that BOB was the QB coach when they drafted him) leans in favor of Mallet rather than against him.
Mallet also has to be looked at as a package deal; if he's deemed good enough, then he comes with Clowney/Watkins/Matthews. That, more than anything else, is potentially Mallet's greatest asset.
I don't think this makes any sense. Do you think the OC of the Texans automatically thinks highly of TJ Yates? I would guess that more than half of drafted QBs suck after you get to see them. Far more than that when talking 3rd rounders or later. If anything, if 80% of 3rd rounders suck after you get to try them out, that works against Mallett because there's an 80% chance that BOB has seen that.
