This sounds crazy but James Harden should be the 6th man...

Right..... except Harden shares the ball better than anyone else on the Rockets and helps the Rockets win more than anyone else on the team.

Yes, I think some people are trying to paint Harden as a Gay or Monta style chucker. As you said, he leads the team in assists and furthermore - there have been at least a few games (mostly losses) where I wish he would have taken MORE shots. One of the games vs MEM he was shooting about 50% but only found a way to put up 13 shots - Gay (at least the old version)would have put up 25 shots shooting 20%.

    Hi, I'm the OP.

First, I'm truly not trying to troll. I believed in what I said.

Second, it is because I think Harden is superior to Lin that I think he should be the one supplying the firepower for the second unit. It is essentially McHale's theory, only swapping Lin with Harden because I don't think Lin is playing all that well off the bench. Why does being the sixth man mean he is inferior to being a starter. I totally believe Harden should be playing the same number of minutes, I just feel, stats aside, he prevents the other starters from warming up. Lin meshes better because he is faciliatator, capitalizing on the talents of Howard, Jones and Parsons. Harden doesn't seem to do this, but is looking out for isos. This isn't a myth...I watch these games. Harden is shoot first past second and he's stagnant.

I agree with you, can you imagine how awesome the Thunder bench would be with Kevin Durant on it? I am surprised that Brooks hasn't thought about that.

Kidding aside, I think it's time for basketball to experiment with the idea of putting superstars in their second unit, playing them similar minutes, and having a second superstar in the starting lineup. I never understood why you rest two stars and put in a inferior bench.

It has been done before. Rudy T usually always had either Drexler or Olajuwon on the court at all times in crucial games. It really depends on the team, what the coach's preference is, the quality of bench players, the flow of the game and the talents of the particular star players.

You don't give a 6th man a max contract. End this thread.

because NBA rotations don't work that way? Look at OKC and tell me if they ever send out a lineup without one of Durant or Ibaka

The problem is Harden is not playing the type of defense that warrants big minutes.

Which is what I said. Except when at times he doesn't.

Luckily Harden is playing the kind of offense that does warrant big minutes, regardless of his defense.

This is such a meaningless statement.

"Lin is good when he makes his shot, except at times when he doesn't".

"If you make all your shots you are a 100% shooter, except at times when you don't make your shot".

"Dwight Howard is effective in the post when his shots are going in, except at times when it doesn't".

That's not entirely true. We are top team in scoring, often times is not the scoring we need as we have lots of people on the roster that can score. Often time its the defense we need to get a stop.

Playing Harden big minutes even when we are not having problem scoring is not the most efficient way to utilize him.

I rather play him less minutes so he could commit on D or save his energy until play off time.

Playing him 40+ minutes a game every game is not good for this team in the long run

    Fallacy fans strike again!!

Did you just compare "making your shot" with "spending effort on defense" and "sharing the ball". Ah, you got me, they are totally the same thing!

Guys, LeBron James as a sixth man would make the Miami Heat bench incredible. That would allow Dwyane Wade to dominate the ball as a starter. Everybody wins! Why hasn't Eric Failstra thought of this?!!!

His point is still valid. You agreed that Harden shares the ball better than anyone else, except when he doesn't. Those examples he gave you illustrate how silly it sounds when you apply that logic to other comparable situations.

    I don't remember writing that.

I said he is essential for this team's success but his choices can hurt the team at times. His scoring load could be shared with other players while he spends a bit more effort on D. His iso ball not only demotivates the others players but his lack of effort on D sets a bad example as the star of the team.

I also stated many times before that it is not good to play him so many minutes and increase the wear on his body and the chances of injury. Wouldn't you want to reserve his energy for the playoffs?
