Did a quick Excel crunch on the so-called "Lin's short leash" because I was curious what the stats actually say compared to the eye test.

Quick note on methodology. For each player, I scatter plotted individual TS%, +/-, and TOV against minutes played per game. Of course, there's no good stat for defense, and +/- is probably the most easily accessible for a 2-way estimate. Also probably need to pick out a few outlying games, but general picture is clear. Let me know if you guys have any feedback.

Note that what I'm showing are correlative relationships. Without more detailed investigation, you can't prove a causal link. However, since this is a forum, we can feel free to speculate :)

    Here is Lin's:

    Here is Bev's:

    A couple points here:

    1) Note that Bev's correlation is negative while Lin's is positive. So the better Lin's performance, Lin gets more minutes (or alternatively, he performs better when he gets more minutes). Bev performs worse when he gets more minutes (or gets more minutes when he performs worse - unlikely...).

    2) Lin's offensive production is strongly correlated with his minutes. Note the R^2. His +/- are less so.

    3) Bev's production is generally not highly correlated with his minutes.

    4) People may be right when they speculate McHale prefers low-risk at the PG. Note for both Lin and Bev, when their TOV increases, their minute variance significantly increases.

    Here's Jones:

    And Parsons:

Look at Parsons, he plays top minutes no matter what happens. Good thing he is young.

Have not yet done the other guys, but safe to say Howard and Harden's minutes are probably not highly correlated with their performance.

So yes, Lin's minute / performance correlation definitely stands out by far in the team.

come on, he wouldnt start for the lakers? he did what marshall is doing now but better with the knicks under d'anthoni...and u also said nash is better than him and nash is not. nash is done.

and i also said why rose is a huge question mark. And because augustin has played well for a month he is better than lin. i cant take your comparison seriously.

solid is subjective so its not worth arguing(and to be honest I am not sure where lin is potentially since he is in tough spot right now) but i think those were unfair comparisons IMO.

this is on point. What i dont understand is he clearly a confidence and rhythm player at this point of his career and somehow the staff does all these things to undermine it. Maybe its because they think it will win more games right now but i think it is extremely shortsighted.

This is the Lin I wanted to see. Aggressive and decisive. Cocky. Mugging to the crowd after the bucket +1. If he plays like this all the time people wouldn't be nit picking his game. Good game.

And I know it's not the game thread but TJ. Damn. Kept us in it.

No Harden and Lin gets to be his true self. That's why he should come off the bench, and that's why Harden should get his minutes reduced in the regular season.

    Lin = Boss

Let's hope this is what it takes to jump start him back into form.

Only if Lin went for that last shot for a layup.

He would be 20/8, and we would win by 9! Lin ruined King1's prediction!

McHale is such a racist. He's riding Lin like a horse! 44 minutes, knowing there's a b2b game tomorrow. McRacist is trying to kill poor Lin. ;)

It's ok. If Lin is injured, Harden should be back and be plugged right back in for 44 min
