Just chiming in as a longtime SONOS fan and user. Many features of SONOS have been discussed like the ability to use SONOS with their own brand of speakers or soundbar, the ability to connect your own speakers directly to a SONOS unit and the ability to connect SONOS to an existing stereo gives you great flexibility in where and how you listen to music. In addition, the fact that it uses a proprietary wireless protocol means you will most likely not have interference with streaming. However, one cool feature that doesn't seem to get a lot of hype is the fact many of the SONOS units (but not all of them) have a built in switch. This means you can have a SONOS unit connected wirelessly in one room and then wire other non-SONOS components to the back to extend the general LAN in your house. For example, I have a ROKU box that would not stream wirelessly very well for whatever reason. I pluged the ROKU into the back of a SONOS in the same room and it works like a champ now. One other thing I really enjoy about SONOS (and I'm not sure any other service can provide this) is that (assuming you have Spotify or Rhapsody) you can seamlessly combine tracks you have stored locally (i.e. Beatles, Led Zepplin, Metalica, etc...) with tracks from the on-line service. Every time I have a party I make a playlist that includes my music and then add on-line tracks to supplement the playlist with stuff I don't own or wouldn't normally buy (i.e. Lady Gaga or whatever is popular at the moment).
Wow, I did not know this. I cannot get wireless upstairs for ish, even with an extender. I have this exact set up you described so I'm going to try this out when I get home. Thanks!
Okay, now that i'm sold on getting one, I'm rethinking about getting a soundbar for the tv and instead thinking about getting 2 play:3s instead (or even 2 play:1s only if they're as powerful as my bose cinemate). What do yall think?
