Really interesting case that raises some questions about the viability of genetic testing and reminds us of just how little we actually know.

This is like the 3rd time I've encountered this story in the past 5 years. There have been documented cases of legal paternity issues in the past due to this confusion. I've read about some, seen some on Mystery Diagnosis and probably House, lol.

Basically, these women have chimerism, an ultra-rare medical condition where a person has pockets of foreign genetic information in their body. In this case, the woman likely absorbed some genetic tissue of her twin that died while they were both in the womb.

This only became a problem for her because that extra genetic information was actually concentrated in her ovaries. So, the eggs that her body used to produce her children actually contained the genetic info of the twin!

In other words, although she gave birth to the kids, they were not technically her "biological" children.

Not sure if the twin died in the womb or that it just never fully formed. So like it's one person, who has two sets of DNA, essentially being her own twin. In this case, it was finding where the other DNA is, and iirc in other cases, sometimes the other DNA randomly is accessible. Actually, the details are fuzzy.

Not hotballa-files worthy. The OP does not involve disastrous sexual experimentation or unfathomably awful things happening to children.

    Boo this man.

I'm a doctor and even I'm a little confused by the idea that the mother shares zero genetic material with the children. Even with chimerism, the genetic material still comes from the same mom/dad. That would be like saying fraternal twins share no DNA in common. Surely some markers/alleles had to match up, just not the ones commonly tested.

Yeah, I chalked that up to the ignorance or bad communication skills of the journalist. The woman would have some genetic code in common with what is essentially her genetic nieces or nephews. Maybe an analysis could rule her out as the mother, but if it said there was no relation at all then some tech must have screwed up. Or she stole some stranger's eggs.
