Interesting to see how stretch system works for them, he's prob going to sign Shaub as a backup, and any other Texan free agent we let go like Daniels.
There have been a lot of garbage HCs that have had coordinator success immediately after being canned. I think Kubes will be a great OC. He's built for that job.
This is an interesting angle. With Kubiak and Dennison in tow, how likely is it that Schaub ends up there, either by FA or trade? Beyond that, how less likely does it make it that we will cut Schaub, knowing he will go to one of our conference foes (that happens to be on our schedule next year)? Cutting Schaub saves us almost 4 million bucks this year. That's the cost of a high level backup QB (that we will probably need to sign anyway). Knowing he's headed straight to Baltimore once we cut him loose, how does that change things on our end?
Schaub will have better options outside of Baltimore. The national perspective on Schaub isn't as negative as Houston's. There are going to be a handful of teams willing to give him an opportunity to start.
Yes, but will Schaub want to venture away from the only coach and system he's ever started with? Who could Schaub start for? Minnesota, Cleveland, Oakland, Jacksonville? You have to think the majority of those teams are going to draft QBs to start. Schaub won't get a "you're our starter" contract from anybody I'm guessing.
I would place the odds at -3,000,000%. Roughly. He's the OC; not HC and certainly not GM. Why would the Ravens throw money at Matt Schaub? He will be released. I would wager the lives of family members on it. There is a 0% chance Matt Schaub is a Texan next season. What back-up (not displaced starter like, oh I don't know - Matt Schaub - but back-up) makes $4MM????? He's not, but OK - I'll play along: not one iota. Why would it? (Wait... are you trolling here for laughs and I fell for it?....)
The other teams willing to give him a shot will surely have a rookie waiting, and will also be bad teams, meaning a 1 or 2 year job at most with a losing record. At this stage I think winning and comfort as a backup will mean more to him than starting and money. Ravens have always had backup issues, he's a vet who will know system and can "help" flacco, I personally think he's going to end up there.
I see the point. If he does end up with the Ravens then no, I don't think it affects our thinking. We cant make moves based on what it means for a rivals backup QB. We've got bigger problems than that.
Because Tyrod Taylor and Nick Stephens don't exactly inspire confidence? Also, define "throw money"? Kewl. Matt Moore - 4MM Matt Cassel - 3.75MM Matt Hasselbeck - 3.5MM Kyle Orton - 3.5MM And there's more, all within spitting distance of the 3 and change that cutting Matt Schaub saves us. Not sure why this post rustled your jimmies so much. Chillax brotato. Just spitballing.
Obviously, but the math of cutting Matt Schaub was already dicey. Now that you add in the whole "he makes a direct opponent better" angle (laugh all you want, but Schaub on a 3.5+ million dollar contract at Baltimore gives them valuable depth at QB)... unless we can find something better to spend that 3 million and change on, it makes less and less sense to cut him. I hope/think we can, FWIW. Of course, this is all moot if Schaub can get a starting gig elsewhere. I'd say the smart money for that is in Minnesota, where they're ready to compete now.
I agree, it doesn't affect us at all really since we'll have a completely new system on both sides. It may actually help, based on what we've seen over the years, kubiak will prob run the exact same plays, same calls, and predictable tendencies that Arian or aj could help crennel prepare for.
I'm not even talking about the "sharing secrets" angle, which is completely moot given the coaching change. I'm just talking about having the best insurance policy for Flacco that money can buy in a guy that has 7 years vested in Kubiak's system. As down as we all are on Schaub, Baltimore would love to have him holding a clipboard.
Not questioning flacco's health, just stating its a rotating door of young players behind him, and teams typically want an experienced vet ready if something were to happen.
I don't think we are in a position to worry about that (giving Baltimore a "quality" backup). Nobody on this team was more tied to Kubiak than Schaub, and I don't think Rick and Bob are going to even consider keeping him around. It might be different if Baltimore was in our division, but that's it. I think the best bet is offering a cheap 1 or 2 year deal to Josh Mccown or Chad Henne or somebody of the like to give you plenty of insurance at QB going into the draft.
We're on the same page on Schaub. I can absolutely see us hanging onto him regardless of Baltimore's situation. We don't get that much cap relief and he still has value. I just don't think the deciding factor will come down to Baltimore. Ultimately I think O'Brien has an eye on someone already. I had been thinking Cassel or Sanchez but apparently Sanchez has decent value.
Completely agree with you, which is why I think it makes perfect sense he'll end up a raven. But to contemplate keeping him with our cap issues to prevent helping another team can't be something we're concerned about. O'brien and every Texan player should be thinking we'd beat them regardless of how many former texans they sign.
