Yeah, that's one of the arguments that isn't really worth responding to. Those kinds of people probably mean well, but they just don't get it.

Well you're not finding that QB in this draft, so might as well get the best talent.

So you are comparing Sam Montgomery and undersized guy with a limited ceiling to Clowney who might have the best pro day for any defensive player ever.

I have been on the TB bandwagon since day 1. You still wouldn't miss if you picked up Clowney.

And yet, he didn't put up any fuss at all or make any real effort to keep him around when Mario left to go to Buffalo.

I'm not asking about Mario as a player, so much as McNair's experience with Mario, if he's linking the two in his mind. Maybe I just missed McNair's tears and hand wringing when Mario left town. My memory of it is that they basically said, "don't let the door hit you on the way out" and we're much more focused on promoting JJ Watt.

Clowney's 3 sacks shows a lack of desire to be great.

I hate excuses and explanations, I love production.

For him to be so unproductive in his last year of college makes him unworthy of 1.1

Not to mention his plethora of character red flags.

College is really tough to judge sometimes. I want TB. But the Texans will draft a star if they take Clowney. If he runs a 4.4 at that size, he will be far and away the hottest prospect in the draft.

If he's linking the two in his mind it could be because Mario was picked first overall by the Texans because there wasn't a QB worth the first overall pick and now Clowney is in that same situation.

I know he is a speciman. There is no denying that.

It's his mindset that scares me.

I mean you are an athletic freak by NFL standards, and you could only get 3 sacks in a full college season? I'm sorry, but that's inexcusable. What will his mindset be when he gets paid? Does he WANT to be great? Or will he get by on his athletic talent alone?

I think it is a very good question. It will obviously be the number one thing that he is asked about and that is understandable. I saw two games from his this year, and it really didn't look like he was taking plays off. He got chipped all game each time, but like you mentioned, it isn't an excuse if he is a great football player. Truth of the matter is, he isn't a great football player yet. He has DPOY written all over him if he gets it together, and what better than to fight it out with your very own JJ WATT.

I think they didn't want to keep Mario because he wasn't a good fit for the 3-4... He's too weak to be a DE in the 3-4 and too big to stand up in the 3-4. He still had 5 sacks in Wade's system but he still looked out of place, IMO...

I understand your reservations about the lack of production... But what character red flags are you referring to...???

    5 1/2 sacks in 5 games.

And he was absolutely big enough to play DE in a 3-4, but he would have been underutilized.

He was a guy who lacked the heart. That is why McNair didn't pony up.

Well I don't see it that way, I think they didn't keep Mario because they couldn't afford to. He was going to make WAY more than they could fit under the cap.

That's basically what I said TMac. Too weak to be a DE in the 3-4. He doesn't have that kind of motor.

I can't argue that. Plus they probably had faith in Barwin as well...
