Since the greatest musician of my generation will be on a postage stamp one day, it's time to decide how the great Weird Al Yankovic will be immortalized. Do you prefer the old soul-glo, thick glasses Al Or the new streamlined, aerodynamic Al Remember, your vote is important!
I worked at Benningans in the Galleria in the mid-80's. Wierd Al came in one time and sat in a booth. (During his "Eat it" phase. Was wearing Michael Jackson jacket and everything) A little girl wanted his autograph and asked the waiter to ask him. Wierd Al flat out said no. Has was actually quite a jerk. I mean c'mon you're only Wierd Al
Ya Wierd Al is a jerk, but Weird Al is a cool guy--- donates to charity, signs autographs, a real stand-up guy. Working at the Galleria mid-80's at Bennigans must have been a great job---that is in no way a joke. Seriously, i'm guessing a young guy making insane tips---am I right? Seeing Weird Al in a Zippered Michael Jackson jacket how could W.A. actually wear that out in public---
Yeah I know he's a generous guy just not with autographs. Tips were sh!tty because I was only a busboy. Yes he was wearing the red one with black highwater pants, just like in MJs video. Why in public? I guess he's just full of himself or just full of himself or just being wierd Al!
Old WA. He lost his sig mustache. And the glasses....noooo HE needs dark hair with glasses. His songs are hilarious.
The window doesn't open And the fan is broke, And my face is turning blue. I haven't been in a crowd like this Since I went to see The Who. I think I'm missing a contact lens I think my wallet's gone And I think this bus is stopping again To let a couple more freaks get on Look out Another one rides the bus
I met Weird Al after a show in San Antonio. He's a really cool guy! Signed autographs for us, talked about a few things, it was cool!
Old Al, definitely. The glasses and p*rn 'stache made him, I tell you! BTW I've read in several places that Al is painfully shy and is very uncomfortable around people he doesn't know (*sigh* too much Behind the Music on VH1). It could be he wasn't being a jerk, just uncomfortable I dunno.
I hope you're not refering to his song remakes. I always considered his career the biggest shame in the world. How does a man make millions of dollars just by changing the words to popular songs. Boggles my mind.
Wow, Shady. I'm not sure how to respond. The guy was the first to do parodies on songs (whether lame or not, in your opinion, is irrelevant) Have you ever seen UHF? (Even Siskel & Ebert came back years later and said it was a "classic comedy") Say what you want, but he was as original as they come.
Well, he wasn't the first to parody songs, but he was the first to make a buttload of money by doing it! Weird Al has dozens of songs that are originals. I'd guess that 60% of all his songs are original works. In fact, one of his biggest hits was "Dare to be Stupid" back in 1985. He plays the accordian and guitar, and also does all the musical arrangements on his tracks. Listen to the song "This is the Life" (another original) and you'll get an idea. He also directs music videos, produces his own albums, and wrote a major motion picture...If you want musical variety, just listen to his Running With Scissors album, where he samples swing, country, ska, zydeco, and a flawless style parody of Nine Inch Nails. Add to the fact that he still gets platinum albums despite getting almost zero play on MTV or pop radio...I can honestly tell you that I've heard Weird Al on the radio maybe twice in my entire life. He's sort of like Elvis Costello in that he has an intensly loyal group of fans that always support him, even though he doesn't have many top 10 hits or sell 10 million copies of each album... In my opinion, the man is a musical genius...
I would prefer it if they would use the look he sported for the Amish Paradise video, Coolio braids and all.
