JJ Watt will get his contract next year and rookie deals are 5 years long....I'm not sure about your math.
The success rate for 1.1 QBs is far greater than of those drafted in the 2nd and 3rd and you know that. Pointing to two instances where it worked out doesn't change that.
Favre lost just as many games as he won or the Packers... Was very unrefined until holmgren got to him Cannon arm Gunslinger and quite reckless with the ball Pretty similar qbs (of course Favre in his prime is more refined
Well learn the CBA and you'll know that there is an automatic 5th year team option on every first round rookie deal.
Great point. Clowney is absolutely a luxury pick. Our pass rush should improve with better scheme. Wade's system was outdated, and he refused to get more "exotic". I feel like the Texans were in base D the entire season.
How does that not change literally everything? Do you have any clue what the team will look like 5 years from now? Can you even definitively say that JJ Watt will even be alive 5 years from now? You don't decide against drafting a player because of what their contract MIGHT look like half a decade later.
People think if we draft Clowney, that we will be crap enough to draft a top 10 player next year to grab one of these elusive quarterbacks? Highly doubt it. If anything, all of them a "potentially" better than Teddy apart from Winston. But you have to be kidding yourself if you think we are drafting at 1 again next year.
It's funny you say that (though not surprising due to some of your other takes) as if Crennel's defenses are really known for great pass rushing...he's been coach of a top 5 team in sacks once, most of the time his teams are below average when it comes to sacking the QB. It's Wade Phillips who has great pass rushing schemes.
I don't think there is much chance that we'd get a top 10 pick if we got Clowney, our defense should be good enough, and our schedule weak enough to where we could challenge for the playoffs. If we go the Clowney route, we'll pick a QB in a later round and that's who we'll roll with.
I disagree with this assessment. Wade's scheme is rather generic, and relies on man to man coverage while 5 players attempt to get to the QB. While I enjoyed Wade's tenure in Houston, and I do not want to take anything away from it, I feel like his defense's red zone performance this past season justified his release. Not to mention anytime we faced a top QB our defense was roasted like a duck. I am not "all in" on Romeo either. I am curious to see what he brings to the table. I dearly hope his scheme includes more exotic blitzes and coverage disguises.
Well disagreement doesn't change history. Wade Phillips is the pass rush guru, Romeo Crennel is the "I rode the coattails of Bill Belichick" coach. There are legit criticisms of Wade Phillips, but Romeo Crennel is a pretty large step down in quality when it comes to being a DC. Maybe Bill O'Brien will take control of both sides of the team and Crennel can ride his coattails.
30th in the NFL last season in total sacks. can't wait for your excuse... "down year", etc... it's nice to see you hate crennel already.
Personnel. We don't have effective edge rushers. Wade's single gap style of 3-4 is all about getting into the backfield, and he's the premier DC for that type of scheme. Crennel runs a 2 gap system, but unless we get a proper space-eating DT for that, he may have to run a single gap that he has almost no experience with. I did want to keep Wade, but I'm a bit more amenable to Crennel as a replacement than Bobby is. I prefer a 2 gap 3-4 scheme in the modern day NFL, but it requires a more specific type of player at each position & we simply don't have the personnel.
I disagree with this. Romeo hasn't had the horses that Wade has had in his defenses. Wade can't sustain a high level defense. His defense spoil like milk and you still want him here when his expiration date expired the year before last. And just like Belichick, Bill Parcels hasn't won a ring without Romeo on his staff either.. And Belichick's defenses _ how good have they looked without Romeo...??? You can't expect O'Brien to want to stick with Wade...
