Drafting Clowney doesn't mean not drafting a QB. I don't understand where that false dichotomy comes from.
If I had to hedge a bet, Jimmy G won't be available in the 2nd. Lets be smart and get Bridgewater, las hing I want or need is the refuse of next years class that everyone will hype to an oblivion until this time next year when everyone is saying wait the "next year"
Well said.. alot of pass-rushers can be found in later rounds- even as undrafted free agents.. I just think the QB position is to importnt to ignore..
Point to my post and tell me where I claimed that. I simply said that it is much more difficult to find a capable quarterback in the later rounds than in the first round, especially with the first pick in the draft. And that is an undeniable truth.
First of all, Jimmy G will be there in the 3rd, secondly the decision to go with Bridgewater could end up working out, but it could very easily end the Texans chances to contend for the next half decade. It's really really risky to reach on a QB first overall when there isn't a really great QB prospect. We could very well be drafting David Carr over Julius Peppers again.
Doesnt matter you take the risk... What about if Teddy becomes the next Aaron Rodgers, and you pass him up.. It goes both ways.. Its a risk you have to take
I would be willing to bet he won't be. He will end up being a middle of the 1st- high 2nd round pick. Second best qb in the draft behind Bridgewater David Carr and Bridgewater are two different qbs and prospects
So last year you would have gone with E. J. Manuel with the very first pick in the off chance that he turns into Aaron Rodgers?
Bridgewater or Manziel would have been a SAFE First RD Pick last year.. BridgeWater > EJ Manuel ( Not even close) and I really do think EJ Manuel is a good QB (Didnt do that bad when he was healthy this year) I can just imagine how good Bridgewater would be
Yeah but you always have to take the chance that "the best QB in the draft" will magically turn into Aaron Rodgers right? Wouldn't that mean that you'd have taken Manual with the first overall pick last year?
dude Really... EJ Emanuel was not even rated a top 5 Pick, why would Texans even consider him with the NO # 1 Pick.. We are talking about Bridgewater and Manziel who are two QB's rate as top 5 Picks (Thats a huge difference) Of course i would not want to gamble my # 1 pick for a QB that could be had we a later round pick... If you trade out of the Top 4 this year (you wont get Bridgewater or Manziel)
No, mainly because I didn't feel that any of those qbs last year were first round talents Jimmy G would have been chosen ahead of all of them
Gotcha. My point is that I don't feel that way about any of the QB's this year. I dismiss the notion that teams who need QB's need to just draft the "best bet" every year till they miracle their way into an Aaron Rodgers. I prefer the idea of picking BPA if there is a playmaker and IMO the BPA playmaker is Clowney.
You seem to be operating under a misconception yourself. That level of competition doesn't matter. The size, speed, skill, etc of the opposing defense does matter when making a jump to the next level. It's what dictates how much of an adjustment moving to the next level really is for a player. Particularly when said QB will have to start at the NFL level almost immediately. Skill set is one thing, but when windows close quicker, blitz's come faster & harder, pockets collapse sooner, coverage schemes are more complex, etc... the better the defenses a QB plays against at a collegiate level, the easier adjusting to "NFL speeds" will be. If we do draft Bridgewater, I don't want to see him starting on day 1. He's a qb that would only benefit from a season watching, practicing, and letting his frame fill out a bit more. What we often refer to as the Brady/Rodgers/Brees/Rivers path to starting. Only instead of having that luxury, he'll more likely get thrown to the wolves right off the bat.
I feel like Teddy and Manziel are TOP 5 picks without a doubt, and they will be picked TOP 5 (hopefully 1 to the Texans) Bortles - I feel like he is a Middle of the round pick, but probably will be picked in TOP 10.. Clowney - I would be all over him, if we can somehow managed to get Manziel/Teddy + him.. (Dream Scenario)
The differences between conferences are hyper exaggerated at the D1 level. It also didn't help Jamarcus Russell and the numerous SEC qbs who burnout at the NFL level.
