nope the point was that we're not even close to being worried about being over extended from a salary point of view
No joke, I would argue that the rules are now MORE small team friendly than in the past..... hell, go look at the Yankees from 1920-1969..... they won many of those titles because they spent ungodly amounts (at the time) on scouting to get guys like Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and others. When they missed a prospect, they usually just "bought" them like Roger Maris, Enos Slaughter, Clete Boyer, Bobby Shantz from the A's.
And the post you were responding to is that spending for the sake of spending is a terrible idea. Being overextended is totally irrelevant.
Wow if the Yankees had to pay this, Crane would have had to spend 200 million including posting. I know some of you guys believe it's Monopoly money, but thats too much for an unproven player. He's getting paid like one of the 2-3 best pitchers in the game. Given how finicky arms are to begin with I don't fault Crane at all for not going harder after him.
yeah but the Japanese pitchers can take the foot off the gas against hitters 7-9...Japanese bottom of the order is terrible so pitchers can save their energy versus those guys
what a clown show..no way we were really in the running for him..This is just Madison avenue. Kut Karter...
thats bigtexxx, he knows everything about everything, is rarely wrong if ever, and totally NOT a racist..
Why do fans always equate the steroid era with that one year and on and only the players from other teams? The steroid era began much earlier. People can believe what they want obviously about an individual like Bagwell, but the offensive explosion that started in baseball and kept on growing can be attributed almost exclusively to steroids. 98 may have been the eye opener, but the monsters jacking home runs began well before it.
Tanka is 25 that should be his prime. Most guys who get those contracts are old. Who has a better chance of being good cano or tanka?
Cano is a proven MLB player, the length of his contract is the problem. Tanaka hasn't thrown a single pitch in the bigs. While I have no reason to really doubt him, he is completely unproven, and at 25 mill, not only are you assuming success, you are assuming he is gonna be one of the very best pitchers in the game and stays healthy, pitcher's arms are notoriously finicky.
Hernandez was 26 when he signed his deal a year ago, and already a Cy Young winner. And they gave Tanaka an out after 4 years at age 29 (and a full no-trade clause). Edit: I'd pass on both Cano & Tanaka for what they got. I hope baseball gets a stronger luxury tax or caps, just to keep teams out of their own stupid way. Then again, that didn't really work for NBA owners.
I've only been wrong once. Spoiler The time I thought I was wrong and keep that other mess in the D&D, for the good of the board.
Is the quality of baseball on par with AAA or AA minor league clubs or something more like college baseball?
Hernandez was already under club control. He would have been 28 before he hit the open market. I think it is a huge risk, but you have a track record of other guys coming to the majors from japan, and this guys numbers are pretty sick. Lets be honest baseball salaries are insane. Guys who have had one good year get monster deals.
