Doesn't sound unbiased. And definitely not backed up by stats/history- just opinion. Bevis the Better fit with the starters - that is a pretty unbiased and true statement right now. But thanks for playing!

If it's a kindergartenn stat, then this is at best a 2nd grader's way of discrediting it.

Sure, a player who shoots 100 times in a game and only hits 25 is going to have a sky high PER by virtue of his insane usage - but this edge case never happens in reality and the differences are rarely enough to distort it.

More likely, you get things like Aaron Brooks "Breakthrough" MIP season 2009 where he led the team in scoring yet had a pedestrian PER or Rudy Gay, who puts up close to 20 a game regularly yet only has a slightly above average PER for his career.

you can't deny that the knicks game was pretty darn strange. he was super aggressive and had 15pt in the first half but had a bad 3-4min in the 3rd quarter and didn't see the court for the rest of the night. and he probably thought - wait, thought you wanted me to be aggressive, and i was, and was effective in the 1st half. what gives?

but you know what, he's stuck with mchale and it is what it is. and maybe that's not how mchale wants his starter to play, but is ok for a guy coming off the bench to play that way. maybe it was something else in that game - who knows. but you're right, it's up to lin because mchale isn't going to change how he views lin as a player and how he plays him, not matter what lin does. so now that he's already coming off the bench, he needs to just play. you get yanked? so what, you're gonna get yanked anyway and it's out of your control. throw caution to the wind, and just play jlin ball.

well, not exactly true. his coach in high school, who he's still very close to, had tremendous amount of confidence in him and as a result he lead his underdog team to a california state championship by beating mater dei. harvard recruited him and the coach there trusted him. d'antoni gave him a lot of confidence and allowed him to play through games and that obviously effected him. so, at places where he's been successful, he's felt the coaches trust and thus to an extent, a more clearly defined role on the team.

he mentioned last year that as a pg in the rockets system, he's had to figure out how to be a facilitator, get others going before getting himself going, etc, and that's been a big adjustment. well, just when he was starting his second season in the same system, he role was changed again and now he needs to look for his own first and be aggressive. then because of injury he's now back in the starting lineup, etc.. you get my drift. he has always said that he's at his best when he is comfortable in a situation, and the flip flopping of roles between a pg in the starting lineup and backup in a 6th man role can't be a comfortable place to be.

all that said, it's still up to him to figure out to how be productive with a coach that doesn't place the same trust in him as his other coaches, and a changing role throughout the season. and frankly, i think he's done pretty well considering the circumstances. reading the posts here, it's as if he's on the verge of being sent to the D-league. he adjusted to his bench role pretty well early in the season with some explosive games. as a starter the team's w/l record is the same as when bev was starting, and it was just last week in boston where everyone was raving about his game.

i hope he comes away with one improvement after this season - learn to play his style of basketball and be confident about his own game regardless of what the coach is doing with your minutes.

Because he was getting destroyed by Beno Udrih.

When you get replaced by Aaron Brooks for his defense, you are having a bad night.

Bowen fits the Spurs starting lineup better than Ginobilli, and the latter is a better player.

Like I said, McHale is basically giving Lin a green light to play aggressive, but he has to play well on both ends of the floor. A lot of time he is really bad on one or both ends. I don't think you realize it, but at times he is out there, he doesn't look like he even belongs in the NBA.

Lately. Lin started the season pretty well. Didn't McHale say that Lin has improved a lot? Still, his starting role was striped.

But you are right. He needs to figure it out by himself, it's just another hurdle in his career. As some pointed out in this thread, it seems that he's confused about the role on the team and his own perspective. He has to talk to the coaching staff and have that defined clearly, and then try his best to fit that role, consistently.

It's definitely something mental. A guy usually doesn't play poorly on both ends of the floor unless their injured. Usually that is some sort of indication that there is some mental issue. Whether he is uptight, or nervous, or depressed in a way, or just unhappy.

The Linsanity thing might still be weighing on him. Perhaps he truly hasn't let go of this dream to be a super star and his current reality is unpalatable to him and he just can't articulate his unhappiness.

I don't know, but something is clearly off of late. He had the starting role given back to him for a month and he did nothing with that. He had the opportunity to re-take it. And he did nothing with that chance. So surprising.

Was talking about regular season. He went down in game one in playoffs. Bev stepped up big time.

I disagree that you can reasonable exclude playoffs when talking about who "deserves" to start.

I know the article is about starting line ups, but here is some data on the two most frequently used line ups in the fourth quarter:
    <table border="1"><tr><td>Lineups</td> <td>GP</td> <td>MIN</td> <td>OffRtg</td> <td>DefRtg</td> <td>NetRtg</td> <td>AST%</td> <td>AST/TO</td> <td>AST Ratio</td> <td>TO Ratio</td> <td>Reb %</td> <td>TS%</td> <td>Opp FG%</td> <td>Pace</td></tr>
    <tr> <td>A</td> <td>10</td> <td>48</td> <td>129.9</td> <td>102.6</td> <td>27.3</td> <td>27.8%</td> <td>0.59</td> <td>8.0</td> <td>16.5</td> <td>59.1%</td> <td>68.3%</td> <td>44.8%</td> <td>104.8</td></tr><tr> <td>B</td> <td>8</td> <td>43</td> <td>110.0</td> <td>121.8</td> <td>-11.8</td> <td>56.7%</td> <td>1.55</td> <td>14.5</td> <td>8.0</td> <td>59.1%</td> <td>52.5%</td> <td>53.8%</td> <td>96.56</td></tr></table>

Guess which one is starting line up with Lin and the one with Beverley? If you guess A is the line up with Lin and B is the line up with Beverley, then you guess correctly. The usual caveats apply, small sample size, opponents faced, etc. But clearly, the Lin line up should be the one finishing games the most often, yet there's been games where Lin has been given the opportunity to do this. I know I'm opening a different can of worms but just some food for thought.

I sense a tremendous lack of warmth towards Lin from Clutch, just complete indifference. I do agree Pat Bev should start over him but I think every Rockets player on this roster should get love if they're playing (unlike Asik).

Well if you are constantly accused of hating on a player, it's hard to be extremely enthusiastic about said player.

Shouldn't let fans no matter how annoying they can get alter your views of a player, especially if they're a player on the team you root for. If they do get to you in that way, than you're just weak minded in my opinion.
