I think that's a different situation. You don't have to accept EVERY opinion to be open minded. Manziel is not an NFL QB prospect so it makes sense that he might not get consideration while people would be open minded to other alternatives such as Mettenburger, Murray, Carr, Bortles, Bridgewater, Morris, Boyd, McCarron, Morris, Garoppolo, Fales, Lynch or whatever.

Watched alot of Mettenburger, his arm is pretty average, mid range accuracy is good, but he did benefit from having 2 great WRs and an OL that improved mightily through the year, although inconsistent at best. He reminds me of Mallet in a way, which would make sense if we took him and BOB really likes Mallet as much as it seems, but honestly I wouldn't choose Zach over other options out there

Yet every mock has him in the top 10. Why is he not an NFL prospect? Isn't that a very close-minded way of thinking?

He has enough hype to where he might go top 10 but his game doesn't translate to the NFL. His college career was flashy, but he's basically a miniature version of Vince Young. Whoever picks him in the first round will not have a job this time next year.

You bring Mettenberger to the table? Fair enough.

Please elaborate on - his footwork, screen playthrows, general accuracy and on-field leadership & intangibles.

I will give you his arm strength though.

Haha, I thought twice about whether to include that or not, as someone would call it out.

But the fact is regardless of where people think Johnny will go - he IS an NFL prospect, just by entering the draft.

Remember, I'm keeping an open-mind. Just waiting to see if the pro-Mettenberger crew reply to me previous post.

I dunno about the "Pro-Mettenberger crew" and I'm not even sure there really is much of one but what Mettenburger has going for him is perfect size and arm strength along with a pretty good head on his shoulders. Probably the biggest bonus is that he'll be drafted where he should be drafted, the mid rounds, there will be no need to reach on him in the first or second round.

IMO most of this draft class is meh so if you are going to draft meh, it might as well be in the mid rounds rather than drafting a bust with a premium pick.

    This exactly.

My whole point to this thread was that Mettenberger is at least as good a prospect as Bortles, only his stock hasn't be over-inflated. Anyone drafted outside of the 1st round is going to have apparent deficiencies.

I see you put Boyd on your list..

You're doing the same thing Brandyon is doing... Except you're using Boyd instead of Zach. Two guys who don't have to be drafted in the 1st.

What percentage of #1 picks become franchise QBs? What percentage of later round picks do so?

Hint: lots more GMs get fired trying to find one later than earlier.

I'd rather they take a chance at #1 with Bridgewater than to hope a later pick whether it's Mettenberger or someone else pans out as a franchise QB.

I would love to grab Mettenberger or Aaron Murray -- I think both are heady quarterbacks with a competitive spirit (Murray moreso). I love Mettenberger's physical make-up and arm strength.

    Let's establish a few things:

The Russell Wilson / Cam Newton / Colin Kaepernick QB model works when you have an elite defense. These guys are decent quarterbacks, but on any other team, they are not above average quarterbacks and they are not playoff caliber quarterbacks. The dual-threat QB model does not stand the test of time, as running QBs get injured frequently. RG3 is an example. When you take away his running skills, like this year, he becomes a well below average quarterback. Look at the elite quarterbacks who annually lead their team to the playoffs despite not always having good defenses: Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Brady -- all "statues" who are accurate and intelligent. Flacco and Roethlisberger are a notch below this group, but they are also examples of "statues" that have strong arms and are smart. This is what gets the job done. Don't be fooled by thinking that Russell Wilson led his team to the Super Bowl. Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, etc led that team to the Super Bowl.

Why is he a day 2 pick? Because his ACL went SNAP. If we're going to take a risk on a QB with that, I'd rather go Aaron Murray, personally.

So you don't think Big Ben had a GREAT defense...??? And Cam has NO offensive weapons. And Flacco had a very good defense as well last year. Eli Manning won two championships because of his team's defense and he has showed he can't carry a team if his defense doesn't step up. And Brady has 3 rings because of New England's defense when Romeo was there.

Guess it all boils down to preference of how you would want to build a team. But percentages say that defense usually wins and or compete for championships a majority of the time.

#1 picks of QBs who were considered #1 prospects on draft boards have a good track record, IMO. #1 pick QBs who were considered reaches due to position don't have a good track record, IMO.

I don't believe in reaching for a QB at the top of the draft.
