Lance Z was on from the Senior Bowl earlier today and said he expects the remaining positions to be filled/announced by Wednesday, possibly Tuesday. I'm assuming this means that some of the candidates are coaches currently with either the Patriots (more likely) or 49ers.
Word around the campfire is that O'Brien plans to go without an OC and is going to do the job himself. If that's the case, I'm starting to not like this HC hire.
I'm not really a fan of a first time NFL head coach taking on that much responsibility. I'd rather he hire someone at least to have the job in name to help him. From what I'm hearing they are planning on leaving the job vacant.
That pretty much describes almost every OC turned HC. Why would you hire a guy based largely on his offensive pedigree and then have him not call the plays? Of course, there WILL be an OC. But it will someone like a Rick Dennison, who was technically OC but everyone knew Kubes was the one calling the plays.
You're misunderstanding what I was saying, I don't have a problem with O'Brien calling the plays but I'm hearing they plan on leaving the OC job vacant....as in no one hired even if just to help him out.
See list below of current and future NFL coaches who call (or will call) plays. Arians, Kelly, McCarthy, Payton, Reid, Whisenhunt and Trestman were all first time NFL coaches who "took on that much responsibility" and nearly all of them made the playoffs in their first year as head coach (and four of them have made the Super Bowl). I don't see any issues with Gruden or O'Brien continuing that trend. They both called plays for playoff teams as OC already, and would rather trust their own instinct as it will be "their" offense that any coordinator would have to adapt to. Weren't there rumors of Mangini being OC also? I recall reading that Bill O' Brien wants to teach offense the other teams defense more then their own. Mangini could teach the offense how a defense would react to a certain situation etc etc. And you let Brien run the offense.

But will the first-year coach still utilize an offensive coordinator? The question remains unanswered following Senior Bowl practice Tuesday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Texans general manager Rick Smith acknowledged the organization is still finalizing its new coaching staff, which has been almost completely overhauled after the 2013 firing of former head coach Gary Kubiak. Asked if the team plans to add an OC to pair with O’Brien, Smith said the question could only be answered by Kubiak’s replacement. “Bill will talk about that,” Smith said. “He’ll talk about the coaching staff.” O’Brien, who watched both practice sessions, declined an interview request. He has not spoken with Houston media since arriving at the Senior Bowl. O’Brien said last week he’ll call the Texans’ offensive plays during his first year. While it’s not uncommon for new coaches to guide an offense, O’Brien could handle several critical duties in 2014, including taking over a team that finished an NFL worst 2-14 last season, preparing a new starting quarterback — potentially the No. 1 overall pick of the draft — and reconfiguring an offense that ranked 11th out of 32 teams in average yards per game (347.3) but 31st in average scoring (17.3).
Sure, he'll get a figure-head OC that basically serves as quality control/O-line coach.... or he'll get somebody to do those things without having the official title of OC. Tell me exactly what you want an OC to do? He will not need an OC to be calling the plays (which is what most OC's do around the league).
You keep saying "sure he'll get a figure-head".....the point I was making is that the rumors are that he's not going to do that. Usually even coaches who call all of the offensive plays have an offensive coordinator to help with the workload. What I'm saying is that if he doesn't do that, he'll be making a big mistake.
Why? If figure-head OC's don't really have any real power as a "coordinator"... what exactly are they doing that other assistants can't do? What is the "workload" you'll think BOB won't be able to handle, and why wouldn't he just have another member of his staff handle said work that he can't? The point is that those other "coordinators" you mentioned for head coaches that already run the offense are not really coordinators... they're assistants. BOB can use his assistants as he pleases, without propping somebody up as a "coordinator" when they really aren't. It also helps insulate him. The Texans thought Dennison would be able to call the plays since he was the "offensive coordinator", then found out he had never called plays at any level ever.
I'm just amazed on how Mike Munchak has yet to accept. Why would anyone want to wait for that browns job. It's a joke. He would benefit from trying to get a HC job next yr or the yr after .
Or he could take the Pittsburg o line job over here. It's rare that o line coaches get HC jobs, let alone 2. If Munchack doesn't get a HC job this offseason (college or pro), he will likely be a line coach for the rest of his coaching career.
Do you know how hard jobs are to come by in this country... Especially NFL head coaching jobs. Can't blame him if he wants to try to get that Browns job.
It just seems obvious hes not their choice.. Bills DC got a 2nd interview, and Quinn might get a 2nd interview, but nothing for Munchak.. I would assume the browns are leading him into thinkin hes still have a chance.. There doing that in case the other candidates decide to not take the job they can fallback to him
