All coaches hire their buddies. That's how it works.

We'll see how it works. I'm just saying I'm not super excited. Romeo hasn't had a great defense in this league in a long time and ill with hold praise for this organization until they prove something to me. I just basically don't trust the texans at this point. Maybe Bill can change my mind, but we'll have to wait and see.

All I was mentioning is that, if Kubaik were to hire one of Mike Shannahans buddies ( even though he hadn't coached with him) people wouldn't be too happy either.

fully agree on your points on romeo, trust, and hoping for Bill. I'm in the same spot. Just saying that I don't mind the methods he's using

When Kubiak first started out, it was much worse than that. He not only hired his Shanahan buddies, but he hired his unproven, unqualified Shanahan buddies.

BOB is doing it the right way. He's hiring his buddies, but they're also proven. Overqualified in fact. All of these guys have been standout coordinators who then knocked their nose Icarus-style. Now that they're back where they ought to be, who's to say they can't rediscover massive success?

It worked in 2011 didn't it? We hired Wade straight off being fired as HC for Dallas, and look how that turned out, for the first two years at least. I still contend that our defense would have been decent, maybe not world beaters but upper half of the league, had Cushing not gone out.

Isn't hiring someone you know/trust a plus? The more certainty you have with your staff - if you fit your style, can work under you, etc - is a positive. If he's ONLY hiring them because he knows them, that's a problem. But as long as they are good coaches, then it makes sense to hire people you know.

You do know Romeo help put that KC defense together and he was good as the DC in KC before he took over the head coaching job... And how old do you think Pete Carroll is...? Or Bill Belichick...??? Romeo has an excellent track record as a DC and championship rings to boot. Kubiak had a younger guy and the defense was garbage until they brought in old man Wade.

And so what if O'Brien knows these guys (and on that level most of the coaches are familiar with each other anyway), at least the guys he is bringing in are QUALIFIED.

What coordinators or assistance would you have liked to seen O'Brien bring in since you are against Romeo...? I would have liked Tomsula but I believe he may get a head coaching job so I don't mind having Romeo on this staff at all...

Way too much is made of what coordinators do once they become HC's. Hell, too much is made of what coordinators do as coordinators.

In the end, every NFL team is dictated by the policies of its Head Coach. If the head coach allows an entire side of the ball to go entirely managed by somebody else (without him having any input), I question whether or not that team will have a long-term success rate.

Belichick is obviously the gold standard... and he has a lot more impact on the offensive side of the ball then people give him credit for. While he's a defensive genius, he doesn't just ignore the other side of the ball... he uses his background on defense as a foundation to make the offense better. Defensive guys know which offenses tend to work, which offenses don't, which formations/hurry up patterns give defenses problems, and which patterns are easier to scout/coach against.

This team needs to be completely balanced as much as possible. Having established assistants who have had success elsewhere is critical to that. A lot of people underestimate RAC's experience.... he was on the SB Giants teams staff under Parcells, and was with Belichick in Cleveland and New England. He will be a very good resource to BOB, regardless of what the true performance of the defense is.

Just looking forward to building a well-rounded "team"... and not letting one side of the ball get ignored in favor of the other. You clearly need both sides to win... cannot be one dimensional. Hell, the playoffs are showcasing some power running as a sharp contrast to the pass happy game that has taken off in the regular season.

what about Wade Phillips, and in the thread about Wade becoming the DC, people were bad, because McNair hired him because of the relationship with his father, and people were saying he was a bad coach, looking at what he did with Dallas, and he didnt that great coaching resume, so people were mad, because McNair brought his buddy, then for the next two years the texans were a top 5 defenses, and drafted JJ Watt.

I feel like Crennel is a downgrade at DC, I just hope he's not too much of a downgrade.

This. I expect the Texans to use a priority pick in the draft to find a more tradiontal and LARGE 3-4 DT. I'm also interested in seeing what they'll do with Earl Mitchell, I believe he's a FA this offseason.

Considering how much time teams in nickel and dime, I'm not sure how much a priority a true NT is. We definitely need one, but I question how high of a pick they'd be willing to spend on one.
