If I counted it right, our record against the West since McHale took over has been 61-65. Against the East it has been 44-19. I understand there should be some disparity, since the East has been really weak. But isn't this kind of extreme? Is there anything to this (style of play, familiarity with out style of play), beyond the East being weaker?
I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is similar for other teams that are about where we are (Warriors for example).
Durvasa thanks for the counts. Do you have the counts of Rox against .500 teams both East and West too?
2-8 vs. Dallas 2-7 vs. Denver 7-2 vs. Golden State 1-7 vs. Los Angeles (C) 5-4 vs. Los Angeles (L) 5-5 vs. Memphis 4-4 vs. Minnesota 7-2 vs. New Orleans 3-6 vs. Oklahoma City (2-4 vs. Oklahoma City-Playoffs)(5-10 vs. Oklahoma City overall) 4-5 vs. Phoenix 6-3 vs. Portland 5-3 vs. Sacramento 5-5 vs. San Antonio 5-4 vs. Utah 4-1 vs. Atlanta 3-2 vs. Boston 4-0 vs. Brooklyn 5-0 vs. Charlotte 4-0 vs. Chicago 2-1 vs. Cleveland 4-0 vs. Detroit 0-4 vs. Indiana 0-3 vs. Miami 1-2 vs. Milwaukee 5-0 vs. New York 3-1 vs. Orlando 2-2 vs. Philadelphia 3-2 vs. Toronto 4-1 vs. Washington
How does this disparity compare to that of all the other teams? Also, a more important comparison is how each team plays against good, average and bad teams (as defined by a schedule-adjusted point differential).
That doesn't even make sense. The other western conference teams play the east, too. The disparity in our record against the east vs the west is probably due to playstyle. I think most eastern conference teams play slower and take more midrange jumpers. Knicks, Pacers, Bulls... pretty much every team except the Heat.
I wish they'd bring back the Houston Comets so you'd be less poopy pants, more... "WOOHOOO! Tina Thompson, you go, gurlfriend!! Mhhmmm."
This is the first post I've seen from you that you haven't either blamed Howard or called for him to be traded...
One thing for sure is if we do make the Finals we won't win cause we haven't beat Miami nor Indiana, which are the two teams we would have to face.
Forget about the finals. Based on the records, we ain't gonna get past first round. We may be lucky if we can sneak into the second round but that's about it. Anything beyond that is a bonus. We have zero chance vs the elite teams. 0-4 vs. Indiana 0-3 vs. Miami 3-6 vs. Oklahoma City 5-5 vs. San Antonio Spurs seem to be a better match up. Though i am sure it'd be a total different story come playoff time where Pop schools Mcfail.
Were not even a 2nd round lock. 1-7 vs. Clippers. 6-3 vs. Portland 7-2 vs. Golden State We have to hope to face the Warriors or Portland in the first round.
don't see this team making it out of the first round. They will get a 5-8 seed so its highly unlikely for them to beat one of the top teams.
It means that without Mchale we would have made the playoffs in 2011 and probably would have had a better record last year with the right coach.
Yeah I know we probably won't make it to the 2nd rd. Just making the point that we haven't beat the east two top teams.
The Rockets currently seem to match up well with at least two upper tier Western Conference teams in the Spurs and the Warriors. It seems they struggle against pretty much everyone else in the West that is currently in playoff contention. Seeing as most of the second half of the season will be played against Western Conference teams it could be a long shot for the Rockets to get home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
14-12 against the west isn't bad considering how many great teams are in the west. SA, OKC, GS, Portland, LAC, Dallas, Phoenix - are all strong teams. Then Memphis and Denver, Minnesota aren't bad teams either. Really only 4 weak teams, and even the Pelicans are above .500 against the East. So when you consider that on any given night the team you are playing in the western conference is going to be that tough, 14-12 isn't as bad as it sounds - most of those loses are against playoff teams. And a good chunk of those wins are too. We have beaten SA (twice), Portland, Dallas, GS (twice), WE have lost to Dallas (twice), Phx, Portland, OKC (twice). LAC( twice). So that's 6-8. I mean, it's not that awful as people make it out to be.
