Andy Reid thought the world of Kevin Kolb, but traded him because he was not needed/necessary anymore and the ROI was good. Bill Belichick could think the world of Ryan Mallet, but ain't nobody replacing Tom Brady for another 4 years or so... and by then, Mallet will be a goner. Regardless of what you think about him, if you can get a decent pick for him, you do it 10 times out of 10 given the circumstances. If O'Brien was in on the Mallet pick, and O'Brien wants Mallet, I'm fine with it. If we get to keep our #1 and take Clowney, all the better. Tom Brady is slow as molasses too. Doesn't matter in BOB's offense.
That's insane. I don't care whether you think Mallett can be a good/great QB or not. To single him out as the one player in the league you'd pick to build a franchise around, that's Nucking Futs! Not Peyton or Rodgers or Luck or Brady, but Brady's backup who's had 1 completed pass in 4 years.
This coming from 5 players on the Patriots? Wouldn't you think 5 players that run the Patriots 2nd unit could be buddies with him and said that? It's a very vague comment. If O'Brien likes him and wants to trade for him I'd support the move because he's seen him first hand. Otherwise we have nothing to go off since he really hasn't played.
Or maybe Mallet voted for himself five times... Lol.. But I agree.. If O'Brien wants him, so be it...
All I'm going to say is, if the Texans trade for Mallet, O'Brien better truly, deeply, absolutely believe Mallet can be a very good QB. Because this is Mallet's last year on his contract. He becomes a UFA next offseason. So any picks the Texans send out would only be for 1 year of Mallet. Where as the pick would be under control of the team for 4 years at a bargain.
Well, I think they could get away with shipping out a 5th or 6th round pick for him (if they were to try to trade for him). And because he was considered a 1st round player _ great deal if he works out and so what if he doesn't. And he would have to be even more sure if he wants one of these QBs with the #1 overall pick coming out this draft.
The patriots will not trade him for less than a 2nd rounder. Look what we gave up for Shaub. I think it was 2 seconds. There's no way they'll accept a 5th or 6th for him
Schaub actually played when Vick was out (which was often) and he had some big games. Mallet has only completed one pass in a regular season game in 3 years and is on the last year of his contract... Big difference...
Schaub had enough run in the league while Vick was injured to draw interest. Mallet has as many completions as INTs.
Been talking about Mallet for the last couple years. I've been mocked, but nobody knows what he has until he gets a shot. His arm talent is elite there's no doubt about that.
The Patriots would not give him up for a 5th. They would rather keep him as a backup if they think he's good enough to backup Brady with that kind of return. They would want a 2nd or would take a 3rd if they thought he had no future in the NFL and were trying to get over on another team.
I'm not so sure that the contract Mallet is going to receive would be all that much larger than the contract for the pick they would supposedly (1st pick, 2nd round) be giving up. Last year's 1st pick of the 2nd round's contract: SIGNING BONUS $2,357,528 AVERAGE SALARY $1,367,276 GUARANTEED:$3,916,124 If you look at QB salaries, I don't think Mallet will be making much more than that. I'd say 3 million, tops... and that's pushing it.
I don't exactly have total faith that Mallet won't end up being another Cassel, but he should cost a less than a 1st overall pick. Taking a chance on him with a 2nd rounder sounds better than Johnny, Teddy, or Blake at #1 to me.
I have no idea how smart he is, could be a brilliant guy, but man he sounds like an idiot. If O'Brien really believes in him and we could pull Clowney along with Mallet, I'd be ok with it.
You would have to ask O'Brien. But he was in New England when they drafted Mallet. But I would assume because O'Brien is familiar with him. And O'Brien may think he's good.
Perceived upside. His pro sample size is so small it's meaningless. Wasn't exactly a surgeon in college, but neither was Blake Bortles and he's likely to cost someone a top 10 pick. Trading for backup QBs is like buying a storage locker. You get a little glimpse of the contents from an outside view, buyers will get burned by their imagination more often than not, but every now and then there's a gem.
