Our attempts to close the game are always mid-range, so it's not surprising at all. 3's provide better value over the course of the game, but at the end you just need points, any points, and a mid-range jumper is slightly easier than a 3.
As long as it goes in, don't fix it. I've seen many the players screw over their shot because they were trying to "fix" it to have the motion of a "normal" shot.
There is a lot of false information on these boards. The Rockets do run plays. Often times what are labeled as "hero ball" is actually a designed play. Further, McHale does not design most of the plays. Finch and Bickerstaff and even Sampson do. The McHale hate is a joke.
Fans really tend to overlook the clock management aspect of late game situations. It's hard to control the clock when you're driving and dishing. Maybe you get a shot off too early or too late. The other part, isos create a much lower variance in the possession. There's not much to it. Either Harden makes the shot, or miss and we get a offensive rebound, or miss and the other team gets a defensive rebound. If we run a normal set, the ball may be stolen for a fast break, may get blocked for a fast break, lots of nasty things that may be okay over the course of the game, but not fine at end of games. The Rockets play a high-risk/high-reward style for most of the game, but when it comes to crunch time, they actually go the other way. They play safe and methodical. Which is why they give fans the impression that it's just Harden isos.
100% agree about the clock management aspect! I have been saying this for the last couple of months on this board
Thank you, there is a reason everybody runs iso's in final posession situations. You may sacrifice shot quality, but you guarantee who has the ball, how much time is left, and very low risk for igniting an opponent counter-attack.
It is? It's very poorly constructed then. Really not very funny at all. If you are going to make a McHale joke your goto punchlines would be things like "the ball gets sticky" or "we'll see"; I just don't see those used much at all.
So many cupcakes try to argue for this bullcrap. They don't understand that its harder to stay consistent from 3 than it is with set plays in the midrange. 3s should be taken within the flow of the offense, even better when its the inside out game but you can just keep jacking them up.
