Are we just going to sit here and ignore the (terrible) season Otto Porter is having?

Because few here have knowledge of the topic. If I want to discuss Marc Gasol why would I inquire in CF? I would go to a Griz site.

If you want to be a douche, instead of CF why not go do that on bodybuilding.com or another site that is more douche tolerant?

Instead of stating a position that totally defeats the purpose of the NBA Dish section here which has long allowed these kinds of threads, that has been around a DECADE and a half BEFORE you joined.

I'm so confused here. Why are people ranking Giannis as #1 due to upside, but ranking everyone else based on their current poor performance in their rookie year? You need to measure everyone the same way if you're going to rank them.

Porter is also a high upside rookie. He's been awful so far but is worth a top 3 in the upside stakes. So does Noel. Giannis is not #1 based on this year, but he is based on upside. These ranking in here are just so inconsistent. Stick to one criteria only.

    Rankings by upside:
    1. Giannis
    2. Noel
    3. MCW
    4. Porter
    5. Oladipo
    (6.) Zeller for a very close 6th
Rankings by current performance this season:
    1. MCW
    2. Oladipo
    3. Giannis
    4. Hardaway Jr.
    5. Adams

Sorry for typo. I meant Porter for top 5, not top 3. Just saying before you pull me up on that comment and see where I ranked him by upside.

Yeah even before the season started, I never saw much upside in the guys at the very top of the draft, and in an awful draft with no clear cut franchise player talent, you have to go with the highest upside prospect, and that's Giannis 'The Alphabet'.

I mean the dude is a 6'10 (maybe 6'11 or possible 7'0) small forward with crazy length, athleticism and an assortment of skills that can only continue to develop given his very young age (became 19 last month!!).

FYI, Hinkie apparently recently said that he'd still take Noel over MCW in hindsight.

Really don't see Porter as having high upside. Even before the draft, most of the descriptions of his ceiling sounded like "useful starting wing who will play defense, hit threes, and handle the ball a bit." Did not understand why he was considered a top 5 prospect. Some blathering about being one of the most NBA ready picks. If a wing isn't a good 3 ball shooter yet, he's not NBA ready.

If I'm going by upside, I'll say

    1) Giannis
    2) Noel
    3) Oladipo
    4) MCW
    5) Burke
    6) Len
    7) Zeller
    8) Adams
from there I have no idea.

If I'm going by current production...
    1) MCW
    2) Burke (numbers aren't pretty, but the Jazz are so better with him in.)
    3) Oladipo
    4) Giannis (low counting stats, but he's leading his team in +- for a reason
    5) Adams (does the little things)
    6) Hardaway

I have a ton of respect for you as a poster and your knowledge as a whole, but you were saying?

Of course I'm a bit biased;)

I take Olapdio with the first pick. I guarantee he'll have a steady NBA career. That shot can be perfected, but you can't teach the instincts he has as a ballhawk. That 1.49 steals per game is not an accident and he's an all-arounder. I know he's not the sexiest guy, upside-wise, but he's a baller. I think the right teacher/coach makes him a winner.

I do think a lot of folks ignored that Oladipo had a somewhat rough start to the season, but, yeah, I was trying way too hard to make my point there.
The things Olapido struggles with (shooting, turnovers) are one of the easier areas to improve on and high a high turnover% early on actually bodes well for young players. His high steal rate is a good sign as well.

I did expect him to be a better defender right away -- he got lost or stuck on screens quite a few times in the games I've watched -- and his decision making/pick&roll play hasn't been particular awesome, but part of that is the Magic just experimenting with him a bit, trying to find out just how much offense they can run through him, so I shouldn't thrown these other guys in there who are just asked to spot up and do some secondary ball-handling.

not sure why all these guys are called disappointments. Everyone expected them to be garbage that's why they were considered the worst draft class ever.

Interesting and surprising Hakeem like stat for you:

DeMarcus Cousins is 10th in the league with 1.81 steals per game.

    HMMMHMM,

Agreed, Vic needs to clean up his game. Turnovers have to be corrected, shooting needs to improve and also agree thought he'd be a better defender from the jump.

All of this said, once he starts to understand the NBA game, I think you'll see much improvement. Couple that with his work ethic which is completely off the charts.

I'm not sure what kind of player he's going to become, but it's very early to think he won't become much better than he is.

Noel hasn't played a single NBA game yet. Why are you guys so high on him?
