Coming to the Reliant Astrodome: The Houston Animal Cruelty Festival

My first and only 1 of 2 rodeos I've attended I was 8. It was a super small town rodeo (population 650). A beautiful grey "bucking bronco" broke it's leg during an event and then was taken outside of the pen to be shot. Died for sport. Sad.

 

Can this be a thread to rant about how much the rodeo sucks? I hate that thing.

 

I'm down with that. I was going to troll the dedicated rodeo thread, but perhaps I'll keep my feelings confined to this thread... Most of which have already been expressed by Behad over a decade ago, so nevermind!

I enjoy making fun of animal lovers and usually balk at claims of animal cruelty, but things like this are just so needlessly barbaric that even I am put off by the rodeo. But that's been well covered in this thread already...

I will say, I find the rodeo wholly embarrassing and a huge mark on the reputation of our city. One week out of the year, all the rednecks from Who-Knows-Where, TX flood our cosmopolitan civilization and pollute the area with their antiquated culture and ideals--I don't even recognize my own city!

And there's nothing weirder than seeing mainstream pop and r&b artists play a what is effectively a rural white people festival. It's clearly a good business move by the organizers to diversify and expand their audience, but it's telling that it takes such bribes to bring minorities and young people to a gathering that could double as the Republican National Convention.

Great, the entire flank strap grab testicles and animals don't get proper vet care is just a bunch of crap. Not even intelligent lies.

Livestock shows should be disliked by vegans who think no animals should be domesticated, or used in any way by humans. For everyone else, no controversy at all.

 

I once got attacked by an ostrich at the rodeo. Then I had an asthma attack.

Not a fun day for four-year-old me.
