Ahh "upside" at the QB position..... I remember when Peyton Manning was entering the draft and scouts said he was very good, but wouldn't get better because of limited "upside"... but Ryan Leaf, he had "upside", he was faster, stronger, bigger and threw a stronger ball. I remember that Aaron Rodgers fell because of limited "upside", he didn't run a great 40, he wasn't 6'6" 220 lbs and he didn't throw an 80 yard deep ball. Never mind that he could hit a nickle on a receivers jersey from 20 yards out. I remember when everyone wanted Michael Vick because of upside. He was insanely fast, had a gun and was fearless, never mind that he couldn't read a defense or hit a crossing pattern. I remember when David Carr was drafted David Carr because he was big, fast, strong, had a pretty spiral and could bring the heat. No one bothered to find out if David liked football. I remember when Drew Brees slipped in the draft because he was too short. When it comes to quarterbacks, it isn't about 40 times, or rippling muscles or the ability to throw a ball 70 yards on a rope. Those are all nice traits..... but Montana, Unitas, Brady, Manning and Rodgers all lacked the ideal physical skills and are the greatest QB's to ever play. There are some exceptions, such as Elway, Favre and Moon that had amazing physical skills but they never reached the level they did on physical skills alone. I don't care if my QB has narrow shoulders, or is 2 or 3 inches shorter than ideal. What I care about is how football bright they are, will they study, eat and sleep football? Will they stay out of trouble? Will they have pocket presence? Will they read the defense, read the field?
No I don't. Charlie Strong is a great recruiter. His receivers were better than most of the DBs they faced. Maybe not in the Houston game or the Florida game but for the most part his receivers got plenty of separation and it's easier to throw a guy the ball without a DB all over him. But him not dominating his conference doesn't mean he wouldn't make a great pro but NFL teams may look at that when considering taking a guy with a high draft pick. And if a high drafted QB doesn't work out _ coaches get fired and so do GMs.
Hey if the O'Brien sits down and meets with Manziel, and breaks down the tape and decides that he is a football savant, then I am all for it. Same with Bridgewater.

So why was Keenum undrafted as a Sumlin product but JFF is a surefire top 5 pick? Just because he can run better and faster? Theyre both products of a good offense system just like all of the Leach QBs... JFF arm strength is a question, and his size is a question along with his lack of experience getting snaps under center. Can soembody tell me why this guy is a surefire top 5 pick? has bust labeled everywhere

I hate to admit it but aside from his love for Tebow and the Cowboys, Skip really does know his football.
Agreed that I'm not sold on Manziel being a top prospect. He'll have to go through the combine and then meet with the team obviously.
Skip is pretty intelligent. He picks the side that is often controversial for a reason. Guy knows his stuff and can make valid points. He said Tebow was a winner, and well he was right, Tebow was awesome for Denver late in games.

Unless Bob McNair wants to do a 180 on his philosophy of favoring high character guys, there's no way Manziel will be a Texan next year. I watched Charlie Strong's full press conference when he was introduced at the University of Texas. Towards the end someone asked him if the Texans should select Bridgewater and all Strong focused on was how high his character was and how he was always team first. Whether we trade down or pick #1 I'm thinking it's still Teddy. That said, Kiper having JFF #1 on his draft board is EXCELLENT news for the Texans brass if this at all helps increase the trade value for the #1 pick.

MK: 1. Passing skills improved 2. Mobility/creativity (can make something out of nothing) 3. Cannot withstand punishment 4. Must play smart ... Bortles - late riser Bridgewater - didn't wow anyone over, doesn't have wow physical ability either That's why Manziel has kinda ascended to the top spot.
