Lucky for him he pushed the switch first. Otherwise, the jackass would live and the old guy who was trying to peacefully watch the movie would have been dead instead.

Would the man who was murdered have suffocated the old man with popcorn, in your crazy view of how the events would have played out?

No it's both common since and being a decent person all in one. Don't be a jack ass to people, it's uncalled for, it rude and you might run across someone that is a little crazy.

Does it make it right if the crazy person kills you? No. But it doesn't change the fact that you are dead when it could have been avoided had you not chosen to be a jack ass.

And BTW, there is no excuse for the guy not to stop texting or not to go into the lobby.... none. It doesn't make it right that the old man shot him but damn it, why do people have to be jerks?

I'm not assuming the old man is a kindly old man. Who has made that assumption? Where did you read that? The guy is a retired police officer and I'm assuming he has carried a gun must of his adult life. I'm also assuming that he has a concealed handgun license.

You kind of expect people who have kids to behave a bit more reasonably than this guy did. He obviously wasn't thinking he could die in that situation. But, if he would have been thinking about his daughter and shown more maturity that comes with being a parent, then he would have easily avoided all this. Instead, he acted like a child in this situation and someone put him in permanent time out. Why would you risk a daughter losing a parent over something so trivial? It makes no sense. The victim was too narrow-minded to see possible outcomes. All he had to do was man up, apologize, and turn the phone off. Had he to do it all over again...what do you think he would do? Duh.

Who the hell expects to get shot over a texting argument in a movie theater? How is it narrow-minded not to expect that? It doesn't sound like he had much time to apologize or withdraw once the gun was drawn. His wife even tried to put her hand over him and the old guy shot anyway.

Why are you creating thinigs that I have never posted or implied. I have said multiple things that the old man was wrong. What are you really bothered by? That I accused a dead man of being a dick which contributed to his death? Because I said, I'm having a real hard time feeling sorry for the guy?

I would assume that most of us are capable of complex thought.

I believe it is fairly simple to think the old man was wrong for killing the young man while at the same time thinking the young man was a dick and could have prevented the entire altercation had he just been a little curtious.

Any time you have a beef with a stranger...it can end in disaster. You don't know what that person has on him, what his mental state is, etc. . Confront people at your own risk. It's not like there is no precedent for people getting shot in movie theaters.

This hits close to home as I saw an elderly person driving this morning with the sun in her eyes. I felt so bad.

Title is pretty misleading. Makes you think the guy shot the texter just for texting. It is really about the altercation. With that said, no one needed to die or even raise their voices. Sad that we can just live civilized. Both people were in the wrong (I would say equally wrong right up until the gun was drawn, then obviously the old man took it too far and should know better). Old man took it too far and texter paid the ultimate price.

Could all be avoided if everyone treated each other with kindess and courtesy.

You should not at all believe people can be so stupid and inconsiderate to say that "the man deserved it." That is because: NOBODY HAS POSTED THAT.

Personally, I am mostly sad that guns are unbiquitous and kill so many Americans. That to me is the most important subtext of the story: another life lost in a totally stupid and preventable situation, at the end of a gun that the dude really did not need to have in a movie theater. Statistically, that gun is overwhelmingly more probable to be in a situation like this one -- innocent man dead, family without father, and gun-owner headed to trial -- than one in which he would be defending himself.

I am also sad that our culture moves more and more towards selfish rudeness and escalation instead of understanding and conversation, both in this thread and in movie theaters.

Tragedies, in order of importance, if you ask me:
    * an innocent man is dead and another American kid doesn't have a father.
    * an otherwise innocent man, who never went to a movie with the intent of shooting someone, is now a criminal and awaiting trial.
    * America, by default, separates into camps and starts slinging poorly considered assumptions and insults at the other camp.
    * Media celebrates some easy viewership, with very little reporting to do beyond snagging pictures from Facebook.

    Overall, very, very depressing.
