Another wise man also said "Don't shoot a man for texting in a movie theatre."

Part of it sounds like "I was a cop. I don't have to put up with this disrespect. Bang." AKA former cop ego takes over. "I am the law" type bs. Just speculation.

It's Florida, and oh, well ...
    California isn't like this.

Nobody said the old man is right. It's just hard to have sympathy for a rude jackass that escalated a situation that he was responsible for starting.
You're only looking at it through the victim's eyes. If I lost someone and they had fault in their death, I'd be sad but understand the situation. For example, if I lost a family member because they were drunk driving, I'd be sad they were dead but I'd think they were a dumbass because they were driving drunk.

It's unfortunate that this ended up tragically, but let's not pretend like the victim was some sort of saint. He made many bad errors that led to his death, and some of us don't think he deserves sympathy because of his bad choices.

regardless of what you think is right or wrong, the guy is dead because he was a being a dick. For your own self preservation don't be a fuking dick. The old man may have been wrong but the guy is still dead. It could have been prevented if he had just followed one basic rule that exists in all theaters... Don't Text.

Good grief, at the very least once you realize you are disturbing others who have paid money, either stop or go to the lobby, don't escalate the situation.

Too bad the dude died but it sounds like he deserved an ass whooping. Hate people who text, talk, and are rude during the movies. Don't really feel all that bad about this.

Maybe so and the old man will almost certainly be prosecuted and sent to jail. The 41 year old will still be dead, his wife will still be a widow and his daughter will grow up with out a father. The young man could have saved himself and kept his family intact just be being considerate or at the very least not escalating the situation by throwing popcorn in the old mans face.

Drunk Driving is COMPLETELY different from texting in a movie theatre. That's because the latter is not Illegal and does not put the lives of others in danger. Enlighten me if y'all know of someone dying through the residual effects of a movie texter.

Killing someone for texting in a movie theatre is akin to shooting some-one that skipped in a line at wal-mart.

    Is skipping illegal?

No. But its a douche move.

Should someone get killed for being a douche?

    No.

OK, the next time you cut someone off in traffic, do you hope that the person will pull out a gun and shoot you? Or the next time you're rude b/c you're rushing to do something- or b/c someone pisses you off at a Weineschnitzel or something- do you hope to be killed to be taught a lesson?

There is no way he could have known throwing popcorn would kill him

Are you not seeing the point here? The OLD man escalated the situation by bringing a GUN into the equation. If the guy was being a dick, PUNCH HIM. Don't pull out a 30 caliber and shoot the poor ****er!

The man who had been texting, Chad Oulson, got up and turned to Reeves to ask him if he had gone to tell on him for his texting. Oulson reportedly said, in effect: I was just sending a message to my young daughter.

I'm pretty sure throwing popcorn isn't punishable by death, even in Saudi Arabia.

And that's why the old man will likely be spending a significant amount of time in jail.

That's a nice way to say how Oulson reacted.

He should have went outside the theater to text.

It's funny whenever someone is shot dead, the media always want to make them look innocent. It's always "neighbors and friends describe him as nice, sweet, caring, ... ". Whatever. So nice that he started **** with an old man? What would you guys do if someone throws food at you?
