It was okay. A little disappointed. I liked the weird humor, but as far as love stories go... It was alright. Was expecting Eternal Sunshine type greatness.

    Amazing movie. Instant classic.

The foul mouthed video game character was too funny.

Story was a little formulaic for Spike Jonze, but it wasn't bad.

    6.5/10 for me

8/10. I was underwhelmed with the trailer - wondered what could possibly happen for 90 minutes that's more interesting than what we've already seen in the trailer. Turns out they did a good job and I was interested almost the entire time. Some fantastic questions posed with the plot and obstacles.

I might've liked it a little more than you guys, thought it was one of the most beautiful modern love stories put on film. The use of color, spike jonze use of color in this film is marvelous. the editing in this film is top notch stuff. Scarlett Johanson as the OS, you don't see her just her voice was her best acting I've ever seen in any of her movies. I mean the way Spike Jonze paints the world on film is the kind of world I'd like to live in. But seriously you guys thought this was a mediocre film, really? Are you that jaded, I've heard Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind thrown in there but that's not really a love story, and the movie is depressing as shiet.

I'm right there with you. Not only my favorite movie of the year, but one of my favorite movies ever, 9/10 (it's better than Eternal Sunshine IMO).

I agree. Everything about this film was great. From the color palette, to the high waisted men's pants to the soundtrack was outstanding.

    Discussion of movie plot below:

One thing I didn't get in the film was that when they showed flashbacks to his previous marriage it appeared like it was modern day (2014), but the present day of the film with his interactions with the OS seemed like 50 years in the future. But Theo looked the same in both the flashbacks and future.

Were the flashbacks supposed to be just a few years prior? Also what year in the future do you think the film was set in?

    I really dug the movie...

But feel that it ended to abruptly. They had a great chance to go in to more backstory as to where the OS's went, why they went away and how they became "companions" for more than one person. Were they designed to support more than one person/user, or did they learn to be that way? If they were designed that way, then it was more like a cloud-based OS... I could go on and on.

    So many questions.

Also, it just won best original screenplay at the Golden Globes.

    In response to the flashbacks...

He had been separated from his wife for only a year. They sign the divorce papers during the movie. I didn't get the feeling that it was "far in the past" with the flashbacks, but I don't believe they mentioned how long they were together, so it could have been 5-10 years.

Also, other than the technological aspects and skyline there wasn't a whole lot that showed this wasn't that far into the future that I recall.

I just found out that Scarlett replaced Samantha Morton very late in the production process, Spike wasn't happy with the direction it was going, so he recast the role and re-recorded all of the voiceover almost entirely...

So he didn't like Morton's voice?

    Ouch.

Include me in the club. I found this movie worthy of 10/10.

As I agree with what my club mates have already said, I must also rant about the dialogue. Spike Jonze kills it every.damn.time and knows just what to say that really sticks with you in this one. The writing along with the acting just breaks levees down for feeling symp/empathetic for all three of the main characters on every account which provokes such a connection, you’re sapped into the film. A personable ride that I could relate to on many different levels. Not to mention: ORIGINAL!!! In a world of remakes and sequels, Spike hits it home.

“Your past is only you telling yourself stories.”

No backstory was needed IMO. She left immediately out of his life just as quick as she entered into it. We were lucky to learn along with Theo how it was she was able to come into his life, and we were misfortunate to not learn along with Theo how/where she left to.

I loved the film and gave it a 9 out of 10 personally.

I guess being a geek who was just as interested in the "futorology" as I was in the movie, I wanted to know more about the OS(es). I think something as simple a news blurb about where they went and what caused it would have done wonders.

I also think that they could have shown how it had a wider affect across society as a whole. Again, even something as simple as flashing a news article or something similar. I think it would have made the film have a larger emotional impact in showing that he wasn't alone (which they did slightly while he was sitting on the subway steps).

I guess the fact that the technology aspects they showed throughout the movie were so compelling is proof that they did a good job, as I wanted to know more about this world Spike created... a lot more.

That was one of the best quotes in a movie in recent memory.

I liked it, gotta admit, I had to read the movie spoilers review just to get more of an understanding. I can see how people wouldn't like it.

The "sigh" argument brilliantly displays disagreements in relationships.

Olivia Wilde's very small role is worth mentioning

FYI, Spike Jonze was the voice of the alien video game character
