Well you are comparing Rodgers who is a well respected guy in Green Bay community, to a guy who goes out and gets kicked out of Peyton Manning's camp for kids. Stop, just stop. Rodgers discount double check is a part of his product. Manziel's seemed like a ploy to mock the NCAAF. Better completion percentage, better 3rd down completion rate, better TD/INT ratio, plays in a pro-style offense, has a quicker release, has better footwork, doesn't throw up continuous jump balls, doesn't sprint out the pocket at the first sign of pressure. I can go on and on, but what is the point Remi? You will just find some point to nit pick and straggle along this thread.
Lol at Bridgewater being the obvious and logical choice. He isn't. There is risk involved in taking a small framed, lower level compeitition QB. Now he is definitely the most pro ready among the QBs, but that doesn't make him the best QB to take, especially with the team the Texans already have. There is nothing special about Bridgewater. There is something special about Manziel. People act like he can't throw from the pocket when some of his best throws have been from there. He showed obvious improvement from year one to year two.
Has a quicker release than Manziel? Where the hell do you get that? Better footwork? That's debatable. The jump ball thing is just stupid. And sprinting out of the pocket at the first signs of pressure is just as dumb of a statement. You haven't watched him play have you? Please go on with more tho.
Wow. After scanning through this thread, its pretty obvious that a lot of you don't know the first thing about Johnny, just what ESPN talking heads force feed you. Its actually pretty sad and hilarious at the same time. Don't be a bunch of sheep. One of the dumbest arguments I've ever heard against Johnny is said on here a lot actually. "Well Johnny will suck because, all that running around and miracle passes won't work in the NFL".........well then he WON'T DO IT!!! He's not stupid! Its not like he'll get in the NFL and tell coach O'Brian, "Look coach, I played a pretty crazy brand of football in college because it worked, so I think I'll do the same thing in the NFL, even if it gets me killed or doesn't work." Also, what happened to this country that made it begin to hate arrogance?? Some of the most famous American athletes were/are also some of the most arrogant ever: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, John Elway, Muhammad Ali, Wilt Chamberlain, Tiger Woods, etc. Johnny has all the tools to be a solid pro. Period. Arm strength, pocket mobility, running ability, hyper-competitiveness, charisma, etc. Sure he needs to improve his decision making a bit, but what college kid doesn't? Here's a list of athletes that were INFAMOUS partiers and womanizers that America loves/loved: Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, John Daly, Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, A-Rod (and just about every baseball player, really), Brian Wilson, Gronk, Mickey Mantle, and Charles Barkley. Again, some of you making these crazy accusation about Johnny clearly do not know Johnny. /rant
Rodgers was doing the "Championship Belt" gesture long before the discount double check commercials. And I've seen people doing the money gesture before Johnny was doing it. Here's a point... Teddy playing in a pro style system (and all the other things you mentioned that everyone else says) in college in a Mickey Mouse conference going up against Mickey Mouse defenses does not mean he will be a better player than Johnny. Also San Francisco, Carolina, Seattle, Philly, Washington, Jets, Bills, Miami, and Oakland all implement some type of college schemes into their offense and 5 of those teams have been in the playoffs the past two years. So the pro style argument doesn't hold as much weight as people are making it out to be. And Teddy has good mechanics and Johnny has elite play making skills _ mechanics can be worked on and a pro style system can be learned. I worry about drafting either one because they are small. That alone would give me pause to draft either one. But Johnny did it under pressure with the world watching against the best talent college had to offer. Most people around here hardly seen Teddy play. But I did see him against Florida and Houston against the best defenses he has faced and with that pro style offense and good mechanics he was average.
It's hard to watch Johnny against the (sigh...) best conference in Football and not think he will be a really good NFL QB. He can't be as elusive in the pros but that doesn't mean he can't have Wilson like mobility. I wouldn't want to take him at 1 but I would want to see him as the QB for the Texans. Picking up that Stupid A&M OL man and Johnny would be awesome. Still too many damn aggies on the field. His "off the field" issues are extremely overblown. They are all silly. He was never arrested. He likes to have fun. Reminds me of Joe Namath in that regard. We'll see how the combine and pro days go.
picking manziel over bridgewater would be the equivalent of the 49ers picking smith over rodgers all over again. Manziel simply doesn't have the athletic advantage necessary to transfer his game to the pros, whereas players like Kaep and Cam are such specimens, their athletic advantage still exists at the pro level.
Alex Smith turned into a good player. Plus this kind of statement is just stupid. People said the same thing when the Texans passed on Bush and drafted Mario. NO ONE can predict how a QB will turn out in the NFL. It's practically random.
Smith is just that. A good player. Guess who else was a good player? Matt Schaub. We need a game changer not another place holder. BTW Bush has had a better career than Mario.
At the end of the day...I just don't see how Bridgewater can be a bust. He is a smart kid, has mobility, accurate. At the very least, you have a game manager. At best, you have an Aaron Rodgers. Whereas you pick Bortles and there is a chance he is a complete bust, same with Manziel.
How does Manziel not have an athletic advantage? He's played against pro level talent his entire college career...it's not like he's all of a sudden going to lose everything that made him successful in college. Sure, he's not going to do many of the things he did while at A&M, but that doesnt make him any less athletic.
I just frankly don't get these character issues that are being tied to Manziel. He's just a normal college kid who loves playing football and whose an insane competitor. Media just loves a good old fashioned villian.
I prefer Bridgewater to Manziel, but would take both. However...I don't see any way Manziel is Bill O'Brian's "guy". If we had Chip Kelly? I could see it. Bill O'Brian? I think Bridgewater is a far better fit.
Are you serious? Bush has rushed for more than 1000 yards twice. He has rushed for less than 500 yards 3 times. Mario is a perennial all-star. And valued very highly by his peers and performs near the top of DEs in the league. What the hell is a game changer? We need a good QB who is accurate and doesn't throw a lot of INTs. He needs to be able to move laterally in the pocket in order to create time for his receivers to get open. It's looking like Johnny will be heading to the Browns. How fitting that another great Texas QB gets sent to the worst franchise in one of the worst cities.
Why do some people keep bringing up the "jump ball throws". He had Evans out there, he did it because he could, part of their offense. He had a super start to toss it up to and allowed him to bring it in. System play...
