I'd like to know more of the back-story on this. It seems clear that JR somehow crossed Woj. But if Woj just wrote this to get hits, shame on him.

Why would it be just to get hits? Isnt everything said in the article true?

Twould be doubly funny if Knicks traded him for Larry Sanders (Smith's attitudal twin) today.

Woj needs to cool it with the hit pieces. Wouldn't it hurt his credibility within the league?

Maybe his tactic is to intimidate league sources into being nice to him and giving him scoops, otherwise he'll blast them.

Sure, but most of what is written didn't happen all that recently. Woj has clearly been sitting on a lot of that information, collecting it, and decided to release it now in a very condemning (albeit well-written) piece. I'm sure most of this information was known in NBA circles, but what's the point in going public with it if not for web hits?

It just struck me as an attack so I thought something provoked it (something more than the shoe un-tying fiasco). Maybe it's just Woj being a frustrated Knicks fan.

Getting hits is Woj's job. Nothing wrong with that. Personally I like the "tell it like it is" editorials, if they're accurate and well-sourced like this one. It's not like Woj is just making stuff up like the BSPN nightly spew.

I'll bet Woj doesn't care about offending Smith because he gets most of his scoops from team front offices and sports agents. It's not even that risky to trash JR Smith. The dude can not be popular among other players, even among the guys whose shoelaces are double knotted. The vast majority of guys work hard either to win, to get a good contract, or just to stay in the league, and his behavior is pretty insulting to that ethic.

I read somewhere that Woj covered high school basketball in New Jersey during the same period JR Smith played basketball in high school (for St. Benedict in New Jersey). He essentially saw him as a high school player to where he is now.

Don't forget his sister choked a fan and shoved a 80 year old man during a game. His stint in China was a complete and utter train wreck.

I had forgotten his involvement in that accident that killed his friend. Most would gain a sense of maturity after an incident like that but not JR.

An NBA exec said Shanghai when asked who would be interested in JR now, he should have read this article, a Chinese team would not touch him with a 10 ft pole.

Is this really and unfair and unnecessary hit piece? It's not like Woj just decided out to nowhere to write a negative article on an NBA player or made up anything he wrote.

JR has put himself in the news-- not just with the shoe string thing but also with the Chris Smith/Brandon Jennings stuff and argument with Woodson earlier this season. The Knicks called teams about trading him, garnering apparently little interest. I think it is fair for a writer to write about the things that have led Smith's career to this point and provide his opinion.

    time to pickup iman shumpert..

he gets benched and they have their best game of the season beating the heat..

they were heating up so maybe its a coincidence.. but it looks like JR could just ride the pine bc woodson has got other options that defend and don't jack around

Oh please, it was an excellent old school column, and I miss the days when Sports Reporters would tear into these overpaid privileged morons.

Ehh. If somebody wrote this piece about LBJ, people would be rioting the streets in outrage. Whether true or not, you shouldn't write articles personally attacking guys, regardless of their reputations. It's classless

Yeah, we can't have great reporters writing editorials on scuzballs like J.R. We gotta find trash journalists to blast good guys.

A piece like about LBJ would never exist because he has never done the things JR has done. If he had then a piece like this would be well deserved.

Telling it like it is and absolutely not sensationalism. It's what the reality of the situation is, and some people can't see it - just like with con-man Royce White.
