Just a questions guys: If the Texans Were Drafting 3rd or 4th, would we want to trade up for Teddy Bridgewater?
Can't believe people are still falling for the troll chum Remii keeps tossing in the water. He made one good point earlier this thread, block him.
I think he means hypothetically speaking but I agree with you. We'd be in no position to trade any of our picks and would just have to settle with what fell to us at 3-4.
So true. I get that the previous poster was making a point about Bridgewater's value, but I do read a lot of posts which severely underestimate how shallow we are as a team at a lot of our positions. We need a nickle corner. And we need another corner that can back up JJo and Jackson in case one gets injured, or play the nickle if our nickle corner has to move to the outside. So we need to get two more equality corners in addition to JJo and Jackson. We need a starter-caliber RT and an LG. Wade Smith is gone and Ben Jones isn't the answer. We've needed a starter-caliber RT since we cut Winston. I do feel that with Brennan Williams, Newton, Jones, and Queesenbury, we probably have sufficient depth at Guard and RT, but we need to add starter-caliber players at both positions. We need to sign at least one safety, probably 2 given Manning's cap hold and declining production. Despite some inspired play Keo is not a starter. Plus we'd have to add depth even if we wanted to start him. So we need another safety, preferably starter-caliber. We need a Franchise QB. Nuff said. We need LBs. We have zero OLB pass-rush. Not ready to write Mercillus off, but I think it's clear that Brooks Reed is not an OLB. Plus we have no depth at OLB. So we need to get two OLBs, one starter-caliber. As for ILB, we need to get two, because we have no depth there, and one has to be starter-caliber because we have a hole next to Cush. We need a starter-caliber DE because Antonio Smith is gone. We need a NT with Earl Mitchell a FA and no depth behind him. Thats 13 players we need to add, and most of them need to be starter-caliber. No way we can do that in one draft and one FA period. It will take us 2 years, best case scenario, to fill our roster holes and become true contenders. ...and we certainly aren't in a position to trade picks to move up. Really wish McNair had cleaned house and given Rick the boot. I have so little confidence in him. Hopefully he'll be BOB's draft b****.
I thought McCain was pretty solid for us before breaking his foot. I expect him to be much improved this year as he round back to 100%. He showed improvement down the stretch. I think Quess will fit in just find at LG, and I think RT would be a good investment in round 2 or 3. Brennan Williams has talent. Good chance Antonio is retained. Other than that, I agree with most of your post. I think priority one is getting the best QB available, not named Blake Bortles(I hate prospects that scream up the draft board late).
this makes me sad ... Too many needs, but whos to say we will ever draft NO # 1 again, dont think itl happen to years in a row, therefore we need to try and evaluate this QB's and take the best one avaialble and dont look back.. I just think we are in the best position to draft our QB now, we can worry on our other needs via the other picks or future Drafts/Free Agency, but at this time we need to find ourselve a QB...
Not the ideal solution, but just being realistic. I think one of the holes on the OLine, potentially both, could be filled by either Quessenberry or Williams. More than likely Q at LG. Williams would probably be better than Newton, because who wouldn't, be we know almost nothing about him. If we spend an early pick on the line, it'll probably be at RT. That said, I've heard that while Q looked pretty good in preseason before breaking his foot, he's not a great fit for a power running scheme. While McCain and Harris aren't ideal solutions, because of other needs I could see us rolling with the same corners as last year. Maybe pick up a FA. In hindsight, guys like Alan Ball and Jason Allen weren't that bad. Free agency seems like a better route for what we need unless they're thinking about drafting Joseph's replacement. Ultimately, a better pass rush combined with not leaving our CBs in man coverage every play (with a weak pass rush) and showing different looks will make the secondary look better. If they're keeping Manning, I doubt they're going to seek out a "starting caliber" safety who in best case scenario doesn't start. If they get somebody, it'll be a backup with maybe spot starting capabilities, though not a full time starter. Probably not all that different from Keo. I think the biggest needs are QB. Duh. No more needs to be said. LB. Both inside and out. In a 2-gap system, the LBs are more responsible for pressure on the QB. Mercilus has underperformed somewhat, especially considering his draft position, but has been OK. But I've heard experts say that he's not a 3 down LB. And neither is Reed. We get no pass rush out of that side. Don't know if we can expect anything out of Trevardo Williams. We still have only one legit ILB. Maybe after Cush's second season ending injury they'll realize that they need somebody else to pair him with who could potentially fill his role if he gets hurt again. DLine. We don't have a 2nd DE when Antonio leaves, especially not one who can command a double team as they'll be asked to do in a 2 gap system. We've ignored DT since moving to a 3-4 because Wade said he didn't need one. That's not likely to be the case with Crennel if he becomes our DC. We don't have anybody who can currently fill that role. I might expect at least one of these to be filled via free agency. TE if Graham leaves (likely). Probably filled via the draft. Not sure when though. I'd count that as 7 good needs to be filled via draft and free agency. ILB, OLB (though we may only get one of the two), DE, NT, RT, TE, QB. That won't fix everything, but it's a good starting point. No team is without holes. For year one, I can see us rolling with what we've got at LG, and in the Secondary.
Real question is if Teddy B blows everyone away and is deemed the consensus top player would you take a RG3 type haul and risk giving up a superstar?
Can't afford to give up a superstar. We are in need of a QB therefore we will draft whoever is the top QB at the time of the draft
I hope Teddy is a superstar and turn this team around immediately if they draft him _ FOR HIS SAKE...
Very telling. If you were to rank these 4 college QBs based solely on this article you'd have to go: Bridgewater Manziel Bortles Carr Which is almost what they're rankings are at the time being. I like that Teddy was just as good against the blitz as he was when he had time to throw, his deep ball could get better and you could make the argument that his receivers are partly to blame, but Manziel has him beat regardless of what Mike Evans gobbled up for a long TD on those throws. Great read, thanks J.R.
Theres a reason Teddy Bridgewater is the # 1 rated QB.. Look at his % with blitz.. He does almost as good as when their is no pressure.. Not sure how Bortles is even in the conversation of being picked by the Texans.. Looks like even Carr has better Percentage than him.. (I guess his Size)
The article is very complimetary to Manziel as well, but it doesn't make Bortles look good and it destroys Carr.
Manziel and Bridgewater are neck to neck, Just think if BOB were to pick one of those it would be Bridgewater.. Wouldnt be mad if Manziel is the pick.. The chart #'s dont lie and they have very comparable numbers (Manziel has better deep throw accuracy though)
The numbers don't lie but they don't tell all either. There is no question Manziel is a talent. But I've watched every game Manziel played this season and clearly he can be flushed out of the pocket with pressure. I get that when you are as talented as Manziel and you know you can out run some DL it just feels natural to do that. But the problem is if he keeps doing that going forward he won't be as effective and he almost certainly gets injured. Second I don't know if he can stop. I don't know if he can ever be a pocket passer with pressure because he never has had to be. He has the best offensive line in the country but when he gets pressure he is off to the races. He can throw on the run which is a tribute to his talent but will he be able to stay in the pocket at the next level. My guess is to some degree yes. He is just to talented not to adjust. But it's another question. Third he is just small look at this photo of him and chris paul. CP3 is 5'11.75 without shoes. Manziel can't be more than 5'11". Bridgewater is at least 3" taller than him and has longer arms. Yeah Drew Brees and others have been successful but it is the exception not the norm. He probably can be the exception but he has deal with number two problem. And it's an unknown that you really don't won't to deal with if you do not have too. Finally he just hasn't improved as much as you would like from last year. He is a little better in the pocket but only a little. He still gets flushed out of the pocket under pressure, his QBR went down his ints went up. He showed some natural physical improvement but overall he is the same gifted amazing talent with a major WOW factor but some question marks. Do I think he will be successful in the NFL? The answer is yes but it is not unequivocal yes. There is still a lot of risks. And in all of this you don't here me talk about his character because it's an intangible that I can't measure because I just don't know. But it is another question mark.
