I think San Fran and Seattle are out of austins league too. Austin seems to have an inflated view of itself. Forced liberalism too now ("oh look at me, I don't take showers, oh look at my beard, oh look I'm running in the street naked"). I like Austin tho. It may have traffic comparable to areas three times it size (Houston and Dallas). It may have an absolutely crappy planned road/highway system, but you find good weed and if you're in yours 20s like myself, its cool. I would take Houston or Dallas over Austin though.
I just finished a long rant about how much I hate shows in Austin... but you my good sir, are a dumbass.
Austin traffic is the worst. At least if I spend an hour and a half in Houston, I travel actual distance. In Austin, there are times where I spend that long going a mile stretch of I35 for no reason at all. Also, the city is absolutely unbearable during the Relays. I live in midtown Houston now, enjoy it more.
Cooler/hipper? No. More diverse? Better place to raise a family? Better place to get a job? Has better food? Most definitely. You're being stupid if you don't think so.
San Fran is out of Austin's league for music, bars, or smoking?? I like Austin but it's a big phony trying to one up the hipster douchebag mecca of the world. Houston is too scary dumpy at times. That's what takes it down a notch. You have to know where you're going, and if you don't it can turn into one run down and dirty sprawl. Austin still has that feel of adventurous discovery but a lot of that is dying down because of size and growing sprawl. With SF, it's dense and compact. You can even drive around the Bay Area to pretend like you're above the insanity happening behind the golden gate. No scariness, just gentrification and the random smell of piss in the air that turns out to be genuine entitled pretentiousness.
I LOL'd. Buzzfest is kinda lame. Only band I liked that I saw there was audioslave. Austins local scene is kinda hipster and lame most of the time but a ton of really goood bands come through. I've seen the mars volta, depeche mode, fall of troy, red hot chili peppers (with and without frusciante), the cure, the white stripes, robert glasper, murs, lush life, death grips, and iggy pop all in austin. As far as the local scene goes there's a lot of cool math rock like feuding fathers and a lot of cool jazz at the elephant room. The key is to avoid the generic sounding wannabe rockstars blues riffin bands.
This was a joke, I am from Austin. I guess it really is as hard as they say to convey sarcasm via text. Anyways, ACL>FPSF, is that better? 6th St>Washington Ave? Am I doing it right?
Now that I agree with. ROT Rally weekend, too. I make it a point to either head out of town or not leave the friendly confines of Round Rock on those weekend. The worst traffic I've dealt with is leaving RR in afternoon rush hour trying to get down to San Antonio on a Friday. Going through downtown is a nightmare then. It has taken me well over an hour to go from about 183 to Onion Creek a few times. I'll just take 130 now.
double lulz plenty sir. plenty..... the one thing i really do enjoy austin over houston is; outdoor activities. there's just so much more offered when it comes to outdoor activities. from biking trails, walking trails to kayaking and spring fed swimming.
I guess most self-respecting cities must be stupid. Looking at you NY, LA, SF, Portland, Seattle, Atlanta, etc. etc. Y'all need to get on Houston's level.
GTFO, hater. You can ignore the many positives Houston has over other cities, but you'd just be continuing your cycle of being an idiot.
