It looks very bad for the 76ers. They get expirings and table scraps for a 25 year old who's playing near all star level. It looks good for Boston (expirings for Asik) and for Houston. In general, I think Asik has to get healthy before any trade. It would be hard to get anything close to fair value while he's out. He's a 7ft behemoth who already has a repaired ACL. Teams are bound to be very cautious.
I guess ya'll are right. Oh wait! Must have been sleepy last night. Boston's part of the deal would have yielded us a 1st rounder. Which we would have sent to Philadelphia. Now, Ainge is trying to make that 1st rounder something like a protected 1st from the year 2034. But if it's a non-suck pick from the next couple years, it would help. And make sense. Bass is next to hot garbage, Bogans is an afterthought at best. I was looking at Philly wanting to get out of the last years of Young's contract. I know Hinkie's after picks. And he sure wants to tank now. Now, if we get Thaddeus, either Asik would go to Philadelphia directly, or Boston would get involved. Boston receives: Omer Asik Ronnie Brewer EDIT:: If we were forced to pay out $1,000,000 (what's left of the $3,000,000 yearly Mafia payoffs we can give to other teams) in order to appease Boston ownership on Omer's 2014-15 money, okay; but that 1st rounder really better suck even less) Philadelphia receives: Brandon Bass (expiring 2015) Keith Bogans (essentially an expiring 2014) 1st rounder (one of the myriad Boston has in these coming years) 2014 NY 2nd rounder (if we MUST) Houston receives: Thaddeus Young (has 3 more years left on contract, was hot to go to Houston and disappointed when he wasn't traded) OK....maybe this version sucks less?
Oh, ok. With a 1st, it makes sense. I don't know what kind of pick they would ask for Thad Young. I guess at least a mid round 1st? Lottery pick? Something pretty good. He's the same age as Parsons, playing at a similar level. Trading a player like that just to boost the tank is a really tough decision. It's not like trading an older player, Kevin Martin, Scola or such. Thad Young could be a legit building block for the future. Also, if they do trade him, I imagine there would be a lot of interest from teams. Is Asik wanted enough / healthy enough to land that type of pick for the 76ers? Maybe the Rockets would have to add to it. But I think the idea is interesting and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Morey explored something very similar.
This is so true. During Linsanity, the reason D'Antoni played Jeffries a lot was because he knew how to play PnR defense. He knew that he needed to show to slow down the guard so that his guard can catch up then go recover to his man. Right now, our bigs does not know how to defend the PnR. Lin is not the only guard that gets burned on the PnR or running through picks. Beverley also gets caught up in the wash. Don't even get me started on Harden.
We really need another superstar and there is one that is available. Morey should check with the Knicks what it would take to get Melo. Dwight and Harden being the only untouchables.
So you are willing to give up Parsons + Asik + Lin (and possibly more) for a half season of Melo? He's opting out and testing free agency this summer. Gutting the team for a guy that needs the ball in his hands more than Harden is a terrible idea.
You really think Melo leaves the Rockets in free agency if they trade for him??? Come on. There is no better situation for Melo in free agency than being able to get the full 130 million dollar contract in a non-state income tax location with 2 other superstars in Howard and Harden. Would Houston want to trade for him knowing they had to lock him up on a max contract is the main question. I think yes they would if the opportunity was there to do so. You take a superstar player when you can get them. However its a mute point though because the Rockets do not have the best package to trade for Melo in the first place. Despite what CF's thinks, Asik & Lin are not desirable players/assets for the Knicks in a trade to rebuild their franchise, and the Rockets dont have the draft picks & young talent that a team like say.... the Bulls have. Parsons would be a great asset for them to collect, but the fact that he is about to hit free agency as early as next Summer might be a deterrent. Long story short, the Rockets aren't going to be trading for Carmelo Anthony so there really isn't a point in debating it. HOWEVER- If a mega Melo trade goes down, dont be shocked if Morey sticks his nose in the deal and tries to get involved somehow.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Report: Bulls plan to trade Deng, use amnesty provision on Boozer <a href="http://t.co/BweI66ZJCD">http://t.co/BweI66ZJCD</a></p>— Eye on Basketball (@EyeOnBasketball) <a href="https://twitter.com/EyeOnBasketball/statuses/420252493470126080">January 6, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> So they are gonna trade Deng after all which means is morey gonna make a move?
Morey and McHale can't even get the most out of the superstars we currently have (and by extension, the team in general). The obsession with adding big names and more egos won't produce results if talent keeps getting mismanaged.
I'm very interested to see what the market is for a player like Deng. By Chicago showing any sort of interest in trading him, they essentially lose all leverage since their stance all along has been about how badly they wanted to re-sign him. Now, it's all about trying to receive compensation for a player that they'll potentially lose for nothing. Also, call me crazy, I'd be interested in Boozer as well. I know he's up there on the Public Enemy #1 list among Rockets fans, but the guy is a talented scorer and rebounder. Yeah, he's the queen of empty stats, but he's a top-notch rebounder that could provide a nice scoring punch off of the bench (if he would agree to such a role). Lord knows, our bench is weak and we'll likely acquire a veteran big man at some point.
Harden, Melo, Howard in the NBA on the same team would be a joke of a roster. The anti-Heat. There would be no ball movement, no defense, and no championships. Forget the financial reasons why Melo would stay. He would be so unhappy here(along with Harden and Howard). I do agree we don't have the assets to pull off a Melo trade anyways. I was just laying down the foundation of where negotiations would start(also Knicks won't take Lin back so the trade is really out of the question). Bottomline - from a basketball standpoint Melo is the worst idea thats consistently brought up on ClutchFans...
Short of a meaningful improvement to PF or PG, Deng is the next best guy, imo. It's a somewhat duplicative position, but (i) this team badly needs depth in the form of a real 6th man that can do a bunch of things (granted, injury situation may change that), and (ii) I think "small ball" can be used more and more effectively, and the Parsons/Deng combo helps in that regards... be it both of them on the court at the 3/4, with Dwight, Harden and a point guard.... or no point guard and Harden/Parsons/Deng/Jones/Howard as a "big/small" lineup. Just interesting. Would love to have Thaddeus Young, too... and to the extent there was a deal on the table, I wonder if Morey is regretting it now. His play the last 7 games has been fantastic.
Asik, Lin, Parsons, Greg Smith, 2014 1st Round Pick, 2014 2nd round pick 36th overall will do the trick. A starting 5 of Dwight, TJones, Melo, Harden and Beverly would be tough to beat. Melo already proved that he can play with elite talent. He produced in the Olympics.
The Olympics is a-whooooooooooooole-nother animal. On a regular team, Melo becomes "There is no 'I' in Team; Nor is there a 'Melo'". He's a volume shooter. Melo and Harden would coexist like Iran and Israel.
I actually think they could co-exist offensively. I mean, it's a 48 minute game. There's enough shots to go around. Harden's played with Durant and Westbrook... though obviously he's a different player now. Melo has deferred less, but I certainly think he could. The issue is principally defense, which neither guy plays with any meaningful effectiveness. It does not good to be a good offensive team but mediocre defensive team. Secondly, Dwight becomes marginalized more offensively. I guess my only point is that if we hadn't signed Dwight, I think a trade for Melo would be much more interesting, in the sense that with an Asik playing last year's Asik role, you might take that risk. I don't want him now
I wouldn't call you crazy for being interested in Boozer , I said somewhere a while back that I think he'd be the ideal fit next to Howard .... Problem is that contract. I don't care about his days with the j*zz ... if the dude could help bring another Larry Obrien Trophy to Houston , I'd deal with it. Boozer also brings some nastiness with him that I think this team is lacking .... Deng would be an interesting acquisition ... sure would give them a lot of positional options.
